Diesel run away
 
So the volvo is being resigned to the scrap heap, or at least being sold as spares or repair. Engine had a run away last night. Managed to get it to stall before it self destructed but scary stuff none the less.

Anyone else had this?

years ago I had a 405 that did that, it was a £6 cut off solenoid thing, got it from SAF.

really? im expecting it to be the turbo or summit like that. given its value anything mroe than couple of hundred to fix and it wont be worth it. other issue is keeps going wrong and i have pretty much zero faith in it being reliable now

I've had this on a BMW 320d and a vauxhall zafira....makes you **** your pants a bit lol...
The BMW had to have a new engine and the zafira needed a new turbo and a set of injectors as the tips had melted.
Ive seen a few Isuzus go big time here is a pic of one I put an engine in recently!!https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...d01551d4c3.jpgAll this was in the sump pan!!

I'v rebuilt and replaced a few customers engines after they have self destructed after running on their own oil. The cause is nearly always turbo failure, but breather issues and over filling with oil can also be causes. I've also been the driver of an auto mercedes when it ran on its oil and accelerated flat out, which was interesting.

I had the throttle linkage on my first own car, Fiat 131 Supermirafiori 1600 TC, stick open. Does that qualify? lol

Bet you wish you still had that now... mate of mine had the 2000 TC, hell of a car back in the day, I used to love the little extra plastic sun visors in the sun visors... how cool was that when we were all driving crappy old fords. :lol1:

He crashed it into a lamp post which ended up half way up the bonnet with the bonnet wrapped around it, the long part of the lamp post fell on the roof and would have killed him had his seat not gone through the rotten floor. :lol1: literally could not believe my eyes when I saw the car. :cuckoo:

RAC guy suggested turbo failure, last time oil was changed was 12 months (bar 3 weeks) so if it is oil over fill its been there a long time, so doubt its that.

I still have very fond memories of it. I was really into it lol.

I loved the 'before-its-time' Civic-esque gear stick coming out at a curious angle at the bottom of the central fascia. Albeit, in a strange kind of 'chocolate brown' hard plastic. Plus those gorgeous sand-coloured, alcantara seats. Best seats, for comfort, I've ever sat in.

Was jealous when a school friend 'upstaged' me with a lovely condition grey Mirafiori Sport 2000 TC.

I also killed mine when it aquaplaned and crashed it. Gutted.

Had this happen on a Merc Vito at the garage once, iirc the turbo was shot.

Getting quite common on diesels with injector and DPF faults, which results in the sump filling with diesel. Many Japanese (Denso) diesels also have the injector spill (return) pipes behind the cam cover and they can and do leak fuel (Isuzu, Subaru, Mitsubushi etc.)

Last one was a Zafira. Z19DT, lady instead of stalling just let it run til it stopped on its own accord:

Results was a melted piston, broken crown which jammed on a exhaust valve and locked the engine so it wouldn't go past TDC, two melted injectors and glowplugs.

...if only they checked the oil level!

Suprisingly the cat/DPF and turbo survived, usually these engines cook turbo bearings during normal use, not this one...proof of it getting so hot was the DPF was perfectly clear (it had burnt out all the soot)!

yep they really were a hell of a car back in the day, I remember him leaving me in my 2.0L Cortina and another mate in a Granada 2.3 for dead going down the A52 to Derby and being in it when it hit an indicated 135mph :lol1: which was massive in the days of 120mph being rapid :lol1:

After he crashed it he got himself a Vauvhall Magnum 2.3 V4. now that was bloody scary... when it worked. :lol1:

We did once have a Laguna 2.2dci which had melted a small hole down the side of a piston ringland...

Now it'd idle ok albeit with a bit of a misfire, but as soon as the turbo came on boost it'd run away (crankcase pressurisation)....Try turning off a Keycard Renault whilst in a panic!

Also had a 207 1.6hdi runaway during a static regen (turbo seals failed mid-regen); bear in mind these run at 3000rpm whilst stationary, so was quick to catch it; Left a patch of melted tar on the car park :o

Had it on a mondeo, on a 240 mile trip; the turbo stopped working at the 200 mile mark, limped the last 40 mies, 300 m from destination there was a mashing of turbines, and 50m from end it ate it's oil. Funny thing was that I had just read an article on diesels running on their own oil, stalled it reasonably quickly, just a turbo rebuild. Still, not nice at all

My brother experienced this on the motorway whilst driving a courtesy car.......I've not heard of it before but glad I now know what to do if it happens..........depending on the situation of when it occurs, it could put you in some pretty serious **** as a driver..........

When it happened to me I drove down the A52 flat out until the sump was low enough to stop the death race I then managed to come to a halt on the brakes and get the death trap recovered to my garage for a new turbo, and myself for a change of underwear.

Before I killed it, on another occasion, I also blew its bottom end trying to race a 2.8i Capri from the lights. :nopity: I massively overrevved it by holding onto 1st for far...FAAAR...too long.

At the time, I had no idea really about bhp and all that. :confused: :wonder: 160 > 95 lol. :nono:

But you're right, they were indeed held in great esteem by the Escort Mexico and RS guys. I think they regarded 'em as a little bit 'exotic' lol. And at 18, that REALLY matters, etc...
