Ubiquiti Wifi
 

So after years of farting about at home with differing routers, develo Plugs and access points I'm fed up with poo wifi, it works but always glitches etc.

So today i ordered the Pro Access Point I'm gonna ditch all the plugs and other wifi and see if this bad boy can reach the heavens in my attic and the depths of my cellar office, i,ll report back tomorrow once i get it...

Any of you run mesh networks yet ? or tried on of these ?

Bit of a waste if you don't have multiple units and a server to run them.

Led to believe jack you only need the server for multiple and for config and monitoring I,ll let you know if the range is any better....

What solution would you use... mesh?

That is true, but you won't find a major gain in range, the benefits are great roaming when they're linked.

I'd use Ethernet and any AP that support roaming. I use Apple at home obviously 😃

Ive setup a few homes and offices with Unifi kit.

I used to think it was the dogs but now we've gone to open mesh. None of that crap Java Controller or anything.

You don't need a server to run all the time, just load the client on a pc (free download), configure your AP and job done.

Once running, you don't need to run the controller (unless you want to monitor things).

I quite like em, I run 15 AP Pro's @ my site.

15 with no server? Surely not.

Just launch it periodically to push out config changes and firmware updates

From what I understand, it's all done by the AP's anyway. If you used the ubiquity servers, they latency would prevent handover and other functionality.

Yep, you only need to load the controller when changing config etc. Doesnt need to run otherwise.

Better quality than the normal consumer grade stuff with a slightly greater range, but they are not defying the laws of physics and transmission power limits I presume.

I find that a single stone wall of 600mm thickness is enough to substantially slow any Wifi gear I've measured. Two stone walls kills it. Basically end up with an access point in any room you are serious about speed.

It is particularly aggressive/obnoxious Scottish stone of course. Imagine Nicola Sturgeon walls.

yep, you'd need a hardwired point in that situation. With the best will in the world wifi won't make through

Not quite - you need it constantly running if you're using RADIUS authentication.

We replaced the two Airport Extreme units in our office with a single Pro AC - we put it up nice and high (open plan office) and coverage is excellent; no-one has ever complained about the wifi since. Main reason for replacing the Airports was a desire for multiple VLAN/SSID support.

just an update, the range is Better but not as id hoped, but better than anything else I've had in there, the stability however is second to none its been very very fast and stable and I've got shedloads connected to it.....

Was a bit of an arse to setup due to there software being some java based tosh, but once id managed to get it down on the right PC/MAC it worked...

may buy another and pair them but moving house this year an its good enough for now
