Fancy a golf gti mk5.....anything to look out for.

Hi all fancy a change from my wrx wagon '03 blob. Looking at a golf gti mk5, anything I need to know or lookout for.

Based on our 2006 Mk5 GTI that we had from new until last year. Rust. Rear calipers seizing. Broken springs. ABS pressure sensor required replacement of the whole unit thankfully under warranty. Whiteworm on diamond polished 18" Monzas.

They are known for cam followers wearing causing HPFP problems and misires I believe but we didn't have this.

Engine is nice, handling good on a smooth surface. On a bumpy B road it won't see which way the WRX went. Ride firm on 18s. Easy to live with, great residuals. Nice interior compared to a WRX, cheap feeling compared to an Audi.

Rusty front arches, rusty front sills just below where the from arch meets the front of sill, excess oil consumption.
Cloth bolsters wear quickly.

Then as above, change cam follower, easy and cheap to do.

I had one for two years. Ex wife has it now lol

As others have said, rusty front wings can be an issue.

However, VW will replace them up to 12 years under warranty if it's still original paint IIRC

When filling with fuel stop the pump at the first 'click' as overfilling can lead to the carbon canister needing replacing.

PCV's can wear and need replacing, but is a £50 and 20 minute fix.
Diverter valve on turbo is another common issue, but again cheap to replace (albeit you'll probably need a ramp)

Great cars. I bought one for the Mrs and was so impressed I bought one for myself as well! Remap really brings them to life apparently

Hi,
Coil packs fail regularly - one per cylinder.
Cheers
Steve

Add electric steering racks and high oil consumption to the list.

Good cars, but alot of nails out there.

ED30's are the pick of the bunch in the mk5's
