STI rear spoiler clean up/reattach
 

Morning guys

So today is the first full day I've had since getting the car to give it a proper good clean and I've started with the rear spoiler. There was a dirty line around the majority of the lower spoiler where it meets the boot lid, something that I couldn't shift regardless of what I tried with the spoiler still in place. So this morning I've removed the spoiler to get to it better (dual action polisher should do the trick).

My question is looking it the underside of the spoiler once off there is a foam strip that runs around the edge where it'd touch the boot lid. Mine is clearly past it and needs replacing but there are gaps in the foam where what appears to be in/outlets to the underside of the spoiler. Why? Is this for water to escape? Why have them and encourage the water to gather under the spoiler in the first place?

I'm going to replace the foam but should I cover the gaps completely or run the foam up to them and as previously installed?

Furthermore is there something specific I need to buy to replace the foam strip or just something similar I might find off the shelf at Halfords etc?

LOL! They were the before shots of the spoiler! Trust me, it'll look like new when I'm done 😉

Ive just spent the last 2 hours cleaning just the boot lid alone! Filthy under there it was.

One more question while I'm at it. The black disc shape sealant rubber/foam grommets that are on every bolt between the spoiler and the boot lid, is it ok to use regular rubber washers/grommets or do they have to be the right parts (original part number anyone)? I ask as they are wafer thin and seem to be made of foam that has compressed over time and not rubber as I'd have expected them to be.

I used the same stuff that Don Clark mentioned, ideal as the replacement strip, and yeah leave those gaps on the underside coz their there to allow any water to run away

So I spoke to Subaru today to ask for a price on the foam washer parts...

£7.75 EACH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't stop laughing. Obviously I politely said 'no thanks' and started looking elsewhere. Problem is I cant find any washers that are foam in that size (25mm outer and 5mm inner) or rubber ones in that size that are only 1mm think. All the ones I can find are 2mm and in rubber. In that size I don't think they compress as much as I'd like like the originals did. Suggestions on what people have used previously?

Make your own from foam sheet or form rings with the glazing foam..........

Looks like its heading that way tbh. Thought it'd be easy to get replacements, and for pence too but clearly I was wrong. I've found some rubber ones that are 1.5mm deep that are only a few quid. Think I'll try those.

Quick update, contacted a company who made the 1.5mm thick rubber washers and they're making them in 1mm for me instead. Minimum quantity is 25 so I'll have some spare if anyone needs some...

Hi,

I did this a while back after getting my boot and wheel well full of water.

I sealed the spoiler and lights with flexible sealant and it been bone dry ever since :D:D

Just looked on my laptop and I didn't take any during the clean up and sealing :brickwall:brickwall


I will get one up of the spoiler showing the sealant in place, ended up "borrowing" a tube of stuff when I was in one of the JLR plants.

All done. Used the greenhouse foam from the link above (thanks again) and the washers I mentioned from the above company. Here's a few shots in case anyone is interested for future reference :
