Anyone have one of these?

I assume they can replace the programmer for an oil fired boiler?

I've had one for a couple of months. If you've got a programmer that turns on your boiler you should be good to go, it's simple stuff.

I've a digital programmer thing with two on and two off settings - horstmann is the manufacturer I think

I've no thermostat in the house though, there is a stat on the boiler just.

It's a bit hard to say without full details, a quick google shows plenty of people swapping from horstmann programmers but those sound more like traditional HW and CH with a thermostat jobs.

I have a feeling it will work fine and you'll gain a thermostat but suggest you read the comprehensive installation guide and then do as I did and pay for installation, it is simple enough but no doubt easy to cock up.

Started making enquiries. As for self installation - not a chance, if I proceed then it'll be a professional doing the install

I have a number of Hives (for various houses) and they work great. Where the Olive is attached, the Hive runs the heating & hot water. Immersion would need a relay though but I might leave it out.

I'm a Nest Pro installer, I don't think that you will have a problem.

Have a search on the nest website for your nearest pro installer.

I've already had a look at local installers, just got to pick one now.

Got my self a nest, hue lights and Alexa .. all works well together once you get used to speaking to your house :)

I've got Alexa with some smart plugs, so I'm used to talking to the house :)

So then, is nest any good?
So you don't program it at all, it learns I believe.
But how does it learn at the start, for example, I have my heating set to come on at 05:20 so that the place is warm when I get up about 6am.

I've read then that it uses my phone to understand that I've left the house etc.
Same again on the return trip, I have the heat set to come on at 4:30 so its warm again for later.
Does it use phone location to figure out I'm heading back to the house or something?

It learns how long your house takes to warm up and knows when you're in the house or heading back. You still set a schedule for heating and hot water and it sticks to it if you're there.

I think it's good, the away feature is good but it does use battery life on your phone.

Personally I set the sch for a week, which literally took me 8 seconds on my phone :) then it learns when you normally turn it up or down and it works with the weather, if it's colder outside it will come on eariler than normally and if it's warmer it will come on later.

Very smart, cost saving too.

I'm not sure how it works on Android but on the iPhone unless you have location services turned off - which would be rare - it uses an undetectable amount of battery.

No, it turns it on when it gets cold inside.

Spoke to an installer about my suitability for installation, because I can't control hot water separately with my oil fired setup. Heating does hot water at the same time and there is a thermostat on the boiler just.

So he told me that there is a risk that my water might not get hot enough if the house heats up quickly, but he did say that he hadn't come across this scenario so far.

Personally I'd live with that, because I could just wack on the immersion heater as it heats the water really quickly

Installer did also say I'd save money with nest, simply due to the fact that there would be a thermostat in the house, rather than the boiler just constantly boiling away

Say you want the house to be 19° when you get out of bed. Nest knows how long it takes to heat up your house based on the temperature outside. Great feature but I don't use it, my pipes go off like an alarm clock. It displays an estimated time to temp on screen if I turn it up, cock on so far.

Here's yesterday, I went out for a bike ride, it turned off the heating, house was toasty when I walked in.

I think I might take a chance and get this installed. Sounds like a no brainer

I have an ASHP in my house and my Hive cannot control the hot water part, so I had my engineer connect a relay to the HW on the Hive and it now controls my immersion. So, if I'm away & coming back, then I can set the immersion to heat the water and have the ASHP to take over when I'm back. Its also good for the immersion to heat to 60 deg, which is certainly higher than the ASHP can do, as that kills off the legionella bacteria.

The other building has an oil fired boiler and the Hive controls that for heating & h/water. That will (should) heat the water enough for the bacteria, so I've left it at that but I may get another relay for the immersion controlled by Z-Wave

Hive doesn't learn like Nest but that suits me for the time being.
