Launch control question Audi S3

Hi

Long time scooby owner. Changed to Audi S3 for the wife. (I like peace and quiet)

Can anyone here confirm that if I put this car into dynamic mode, turn off traction control then hold down the brake and plant the gas it will max out at 4K rpm until I release the brakes and will then bring a smile back ?

johnlogie 03 February 2017 02:31 AM

Why not try it and see what happens?

ossett2k2 03 February 2017 04:32 AM

It's an Audi A3 so will never bring a smile back!
But for launch control you would usually hold the clutch down, not the brake when in gear then plant your foot on the loud pedal.
Not sure this would be a standard feature on an Audi?

Not of its an auto or tip tronic.... You may struggle to find the clutch pedal

Pretty much how it works on my Golf R so i would imagine thats how you operate it on the S3.

Launch control. The most pointless gimmick ever. Thought it for years, and confirmed by TGT last Friday.

To the OP. You should have bought a manual S3 like I did. It may not be the most tactful gearbox in the world, but the S3 DSG I test drove was an absolute pig.

Only because the vast majority of manufacturers water it down to a point of being so. Problem is proper launch control puts a lot of stress on the transmission.

proper launch control isn't any faster than a manual get away anyway.

I can actually repeat my 60ft times 9 out of 10 times with a manual launch, it's less than 50% with launch control

Lol

Depend s what year, but stronic/dsg, needs to be in dynamic mode, traction off (2 stage hold down for 5 seconds till 2nd light), and put in sport NOT drive mode!

And as usual, wot on gas and other on brake and let off when ready

Pretty sure a Audi with a clutch pedal won't have lc stock, needs to be a dsg/stronic box iirc

I'm pretty sure if it's set up correctly and used properly then launch control is faster off the line than a manual start :wonder:

Well the op asked lol.
Tbf it's not a traffic light thing I suppose, more for 1/4 mile

Can you build boost on the line with a manual launch ? :wonder:

If not i would have thought a well setup L/C would be quicker.

Spark cut i'm sure it's called, pretty harsh on drivetrain tho.

No you can't. But you don't need to build boost. If anything boost just promotes wheel spin.....

I am not talking about the odd one or two launches here, If I go racing I am doing 30 plus launches a day..... Both with launch on and off. The repeatable numbers come from my manual launches.

launch control roughly yields 1.8-1.9s 60ft time. Occasionally in the 1.7s. But it is only less than 50% that I am getting that.

As for manual launches It is very rare to get anything over a 1.8s 60ft. 90% of my manual launches are 1.70 dead.

my best time with no launch control is 11.03, conversely with launch control the best time is 11.18....

I am actually going to be removing the launch control or putting it on a switch so I can turn it off. It is good for showing off or scaring the life out of you in the wet, but other than that, not much else....

stipete75 04 February 2017 08:46 PM

Launch on mine is foot pressed on clutch in first gear, floor the accelerator, revs bounce off 4.5k, off clutch then away ya go. A gimmick really, I use it more to scare the shi7e out of randoms lol

ossett2k2 04 February 2017 09:16 PM

You can set it to any RPM and any boost levels, you can even use some traction control to eliminate wheel spin,,,SO if set up and used correctly,OH and can drive then IMO you would have an advantage over any manual launch ;)

What exactly are you describing as launch control? The poncey lowered rev limiter arrangement get on a lot of modern turbo super hatches (think Focus RS/RS3/A45 AMG) or the proper fire spitting boost building launch control used on WRC/RX cars.

ALi-B 05 February 2017 11:48 PM

Tried this on my MK5 R32...its 7000rpm and a rather smelly clutch :o:lol1: ;)

Seriously though...it'll bog down if the ESP is turned on. Manual 8P S3 is the same.
