On the subject of the tap, I've had success making my own chasers by simply cutting a couple of slots into a bolt length ways (perpendicular to the thread). I used a 1.5mm standard cutting disc in the angle grinder.

it's not good enough to thread a new hole, but for cleaning up a thread it seems to work. Also you have to be careful not to bind the bolt up with rubbish from the thread, so requires backing out regularly to clean the "tap". Beats buying a tap you'll use twice :)
