After just repairing my near side strut turret area and a bit on the arches, i think alot of people dont realise how bad the rust is.
If you have visible rust on the outside, prepare for treble the amount on the inner panel, once you start breaking away the metal it sure spreads !! My rear arches had only started going on the inner panel so was lucky, a bit of cutting back and repairing the inner only should hopefully stem the rot for some more yrs. Also the area inside the boot , under the carpet at the back left and right is quite thin so you can easily have rust underneath that can penetrate the boot floor pan once you start looking for it all |
That's not really true. Mine has rust on the arch. I had a body shop look at it they checked all around the strut and said they had a P1 in where it had gone all around top of strut. Mine was fine. My rust has started from the lip and gone outwards. Some has gone onwards but not too far.

Also take the plastic cover off the fuel filler. They go like F#*k too. |
As above., dont care if the body shop guys says its all good, if you get bubbling showing on the outside there is a lot more rust going on inside.

Ok will have a look. I have receipts from new of the extras like under body seal protection etc so I'm sure that's helped. Not sure if that prevent wheel arch rust.

Its a weird one, mine must of set in over in japan as ive owned the classic 11 yrs now and i undersealed it from the 1st month i had it and every year after that, i reckpon the layers of underseal kept it together all this time ha but the rot must of been in the metal all those yrs ago as theres no way it could of started to rust since i had it as i say with all that underseal on it

They tend to rot from the inside out so no amount of underseal will help, Remove the boot liners on each side and scare yourself. Paint on my arches and underseal inside the wheel arch were intact but had rusted through from the other side.

The white mastic type bond that is used inside the car is anerobic and absorbs moisture.

Just a hint for this don't buy arches from Rubgy Automotive or anything that looks similar to:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUBARU-IM...72.m2749.l2649 was very lucky my arches didnt need replacements in the end but my fabricator said they were trash anyway, far too flimsy and thin. Binned them in the end, as they wouldnt accept a return (unused) and eBay wouldnt refund me also. |

The rear arch replacements sold on Ebay tend to be wafer thin. Which is OK if you are a chav that wants to botch something. My friend has sourced replacement arches and sills which are the same thickness as the originals.
