Clutch Pedal switch bypass
 

Hi


As anyone bypassed the clutch switch? In that you no longer have to clutch in when starting the car? If so how long have you done it for and are there any problems in doing so?

Why would you change it ?

Because I normally start the car and then put things in the boot/defrost as necessary. Bit of a faff if I have to get in to start then get out again...

They have a point....

The whole extra 0.5 second you save by not having to depress the clutch is going to bring so much more joy to your life ...

you still have to check it isn't in gear anyway, so not sure how much time you think it will really save.

I removed them on my cars, saves getting car manky inside when im covered in crap working on them and can reach inside and start motor if needs be.

Think i just pulled connectors off and removed switch as i dont recall making patch lead which would be opposite way if im wrong.

Out of interest, does a MY99 STi 5 have this feature?

I always depress the clutch before starting, anyway - hence haven't found out yet lol.

Also, I have a Simtek ECU... So would that make the feature obsolete, in any case?

If its just a simple switch, can you not pull the connector off and put a paper clip in it ? or just join the 2 together ?

I thought it was fitted to V6 STis onwards . . . It's hard wired to clutch pedal I believe, mine works with Simtek/Alcatek and Syvecs, so if you do have it, should still work with Simtek.

Regardless, bottom line:
IF mine DOES have it, and the clutch is NOT depressed...car shouldn't start, right?

Why oh why would a car even have this feature?
It's got to be one of the stupidest features I've ever heard of :lol1:

Most modern cars have this.

Alot wont even start until you do the brake and clutch these days

you can bypass them if needed by shorting the switch wires.

I know on some german stuff they use the clutch switch to cut revs between gear changes, if that's the case on your Scooby you may find you're revs will hang when you dip the clutch instead of returning to idle etc.

I simply disconnected the one on my mates '66' reg works transit so he could pull away a bit quicker if needed without the traction control kicking in. ;)

I work at the crack of dawn, usually unlocking the car, leaning in to start it up and then take off coat, bag and put in boot or back seat. Also it's handy to do so when it's a frosty morning.


I never leave my car in gear unless on a steep hill. Also there is a case for getting out of danger if your car stalls in a dangerous spot and you can not restart, you can run the starter in 1st gear to get out of danger.....


From some further research I've done there appears to be a switch connected to a relay that completes the starter circuit. If I short out the switch it will energise the relay permanently-don't really want to do so as may not be designed to have it be live all the time....

I've found a solution but it is a lot of work and I've lost interest in it now....
