Being serious this time...

Does anyone genuinely reckon that Brexit WILL be halted/reversed?

Interesting times ahead, methinks...

lozgti1 09 September 2017 11:29 PM

Don't think it will be reversed.

We spend our lives panicking about nothing. Nothing will change, just a bit of initial volatility ( due to our expertise in worrying.lol)

The public uprising has begun! 50,000 people is a pretty huge protest against anything, let alone something that "most of the country now accept"!

Just watching last night of the proms, looks like it could be the official after party; there's nearly as many EU flags as the Union flag :P

Huge, no it's not, even after all this time, it's a wee in the rain:lol1:. Very narrow fov photos
Notice, it's only London, nowhere else in the country do you see protests. Pretty much mirroring the referendum result. 2/3 of the population now want the UK to leave the EU, obviously excluding London:D

From the Huff
Some 1,700 people said they attended the event on Facebook.:lol1:

But while organisers had hoped for thousands of attendees, other pictures showed a largely deserted Whitehall

One marcher, wearing a blue beret emblazoned with yellow stars, told the BBC she had joined the rally because she felt "totally violated by the idea of Brexiting".

Didn't anyone tell her, yellow and blue clash :D

The Green Party member said, to applause: "I want a similar meaningful vote for people in Westminster.

"Not a gift from the Government but a right"And I also want a vote for the people of this country

And a Big Mac

And. Fresh flowers ever morning :norty:

Have to love these "mass protest" stories :lol1:
50,000 protesters?? Where's the other 16,091,241??

Probably at least two of them say they are Jesus...one of them must be wrong.

Yep, and on the premise of remai/oaners shown here, the Welsh referendum in 1997 should have been annulled ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wels...ferendum,_1997 )

Blair made sure that wasn't going to happen.

Changed his tune since :lol1:

Nothing 'pure' or democratic about handing lots more executive powers to a government voted in by the minority of voters

alcazar 13 September 2017 02:15 PM

Martin: ALL governments are voted in in that way.

I know. So why wasn't that the thing that we needed to fix first, rather than the EU/Brexit?

You either believe in democracy or you don't

BMWhere? 13 September 2017 03:43 PM

So, another interesting week in Brexit politics:
  • The UK government announced it wants to remain part of the EU defence force - I'm surprised the Brexiteers have not been compaining about this one!
  • The EU scheduled a vote on progressing Brexit negotiations to include trade if sufficient progress has been reached, to just before Theresa May's party conference speech is due - As progress has been terrible so far, the vote is pretty much guaranteed to fail, leaving the PM with egg on her face!
  • The Government won the vote on the EU repeal bill despite it removing parliamentary scrutiny from modifications to any EU laws post Brexit! Not a great example of taking back control, more just shifting control to another bunch of unelected bureaucrats in Whitehall! In fairness though, this is not the final bill and amendments will certainly be made, so we'll see if democracy is still a valid concept in post-brexit Britain!
  • The government announced much needed public service pay rises for police and prison officers, while implicitly telling the NHS worker to go **** themselves! :cuckoo:
  • The latest inflation rates are in and they're higher than anticipated while wage growth is still not improving despite low unemployment figures. From BBC: Coffee +5.1%, Petrol +5.1%, Clothing +5.1%, Electricity +9%, Fish +9.6%! Notable drops have been seen in air fairs (good), second hand cars (bad) and childrens toys (good).
  • Not really Brexit related news, but an indication of the weak £: Apple announced their new iPhone and have priced it in the UK at the same price in £'s as in US$, despite the exchange rate being over 1.3 $/£. :wonder:
  • And finally, today Junker has been rallying the troops with his state of the union speech, using Brexit as the perfect chance to instigate EU reform, planning an EU27 summit for reform for the day after Britain leaves the EU! No doubt much will be made about his statement of Britain will regret leaving, but you should keep that statement in context; if you watch the speech, you see he was actually telling Nigel Farage that "you'll" regret it in the future, after Farage was heckling like a little school boy! :hjtwofing

Certainly, its price setting has a lot to do with their market assessment, but you can't possibly argue the exchange rate is not part of their consideration!

uh yes you can, should be £770 if that was the case (based in 1.3), they could put them at £850 and still have plenty of head room in for fluctuations.

You either believe in democracy or you don't

We had a referendum on our voting system whilst under Con/Dem control, judging by the results most of the population didn't give a stuff (42% turnout).

Anyhoo the warning signs were there on the Welsh referendum; just 6000 odd people dictated the final result on their devolution.

ALi-B 13 September 2017 06:30 PM

Oh yeah, for as long as I can remember big USA brands have always tried to adopt a $1=£1 pricing structure....

My toolbox full of Snap-On tools is tantamount to this...even back when £1 was $2 the tool prices was still priced 1:1

Are you seriously trying to suggest that because Apple rip us off (and always have), that the weak pound has no effect on the retail price of imported goods? :nono:

Trying to belittle the petition size without context :thumb:
So, here's some context for you, found by simply clicking a couple of links:
The petition was opened on/at 2017-09-12/9:42:01.831 - so Yesterday morning!
The article was published on/at 2017-09-13/17:21 - Just under 2 hours ago at time of writing!
So, ignoring the fact that the article was probably written some time before it was published, the petition acquired 7000 signatures in just over 31 hours!
Under two hours later, its now almost double on 13831 and has increased by over 500 in the time its taken me to write this.
The closing date for the petition is 12th March 2018 (6 months from the creation date)!
What do you think the total will be by then? The petition requires 100,000 signatures for consideration for debate in parliament. Its acheived over 1/10th that in two days before the link has been posted all over social media! Have a look back in 10 days time and see how much over 100,000 it is! Then come back in March and make a joke of its insignificance! :hjtwofing

Just checked back and its now 14,273!

Here's a direct link to the petition if its too difficult for you to click through from the independent article:

Again, a fudge job of a referendum! We were offered the AV system which is not really any better than the current system and in many ways worse! It was a complete hack-job to maintain the status quo! I voted against the AV system, despite being in favour of a change, because I didn't think the AV system was a better alternative and if we accepted it, then we wouldn't get another chance to change it for another 800 years!

And yet we gave that same group of people a vote to decide the economic future of the country... Go figure :cuckoo:

That poll is currently zooming up at a fair rate. Now over 17,500.

Interesting times ahead.

Thing is, the Art.50 talks will (or will they?! lol) be well developed by then. So could end up being a case of too little, too late, regardless...

We had a half arsed referendum on a half arsed voting system.
It doesn't change the basic fact that the majority of people virtually always end up with a government they didn't vote for.

I don't disagree with that. Even Blair's 1997 "Landslide" win had less total votes for Labour than John Major achieved beforehand in 1992 and only represented 42% odd of those who did vote.
