Closed deck block Ej20 from my 1992 legacy turbo, 145k miles was running fine and is now removed and ready to go, I have a video on my phone from this morning before it was removed Attachment 30039

I'll get a better photo of the engine tomorrow to show the whole thing but it's basically the full engine minus the turbo.

Still for sale.

Just to save answering pm's I'm not selling this as a drop in replacement motor.

To use as is it will need all hoses/pipes replaced, timing belt kit, water pump etc etc as a minimum due to how long it has sat in the doner car. Bottom end was was fine no knocks etc.

Would suit early Impreza with the same inlet manifold and coil on plug setup.

£400 collected from Newcastle or could post at buyers expense.....

Yeah I'll give it a few days just couldn't be bothered with the hassle that comes with eBay, I assumed someone would want it to build a forged motor.....

Had a couple of pm's asking about identifying that this is indeed a CDB motor, can anyone confirm that the code I've taken a picture of "EJ20BUB" confirms that this is a CDB?

It has all of the markings of a block that sold local to me a while ago which was 100% closed deck block, was just hoping someone could confirm.

All factory CDB will have hatch marks in front of the starter motor... see my sketch below.....

If your block has them then it's a CDB, if it doesn't then it isn't.....

But why not just pull the heads off if you're unsure... nobody is going to buy it to use as is anyway.

The fact that this is the third way I've now heard to identify cdb motor is the reason i asked lol, I'll have a proper look at the weekend, I've enough to be on with without stripping an engine down although it would make it easier to post.

What hatching Matty? Do you mean the lines that run around the starter housing? I've just picked a CDB up today and there are no marks on the face of that but there are the lines running round it like on your image

Not sure why I wrote hatching. I meant those lines.

Just a heads up, as matty said, most people are going to want to see the bores and inspect the rest of the block to make sure there are no issues with it for machining to rear thrust.

Going rate is usually around the £300/350 mark.

Both of the above are most likely the reasons it's not sold as they normally go pretty quickly. :thumb:

I would want to be checking the bores for scoring, ovalling, rust etc.

Due to the milage its probably somewhere at thr lower estimate of ditch's guide....

Fair enough, it's out of a running car if someone wants to take take it to bits to have a look they are welcome to after buying it lol, I priced it as a full engine fresh out of the car still has all ancillary's on Inc turbo, tbh if it's worth 300 I don't have time to be messing on with it lol.

Would people expect bore issues at 145k miles on a totally stock engine from an estate car? I wouldn't......I'll pull it to bits if I get a minute and can be arsed lol

I'm after a block at the moment, and at 145k miles I'd expect to have to bore out to at least 0.25mm oversize. Having said that, I'd also want to see the bores etc, because the block might have scoring etc on the cylinder walls that would mean taking it past the 0.25mm oversize etc.

Ideally personally I'd also want to see the crank journals etc (I appreciate this one isn't knocking, but just speaking in general about blocks) to see the condition of them.

It takes a couple of hours at least to strip an engine down, and it'd suck to pay someone to do that work (or do it yourself) and then find a problem, which is why personally I'd prefer to buy something that was already stripped.

Having said that, if you stripped it, you could probably sell the crank separately (it should be the same as an impreza crank AFAIK), the heads might be possible to sell etc? I.e. you might get more money for it stripped down (on the other hand, you might end up with a pile of bits).

You are talking about using it as a stroker etc etc, pushing it to its limits, it needs to be perfect...

And at 145k I would definitely expect to be able to inspect it thoroughly before commiting to use it in a big power build

All valid points, if I get a minute tomorrow I'll pull the heads off and stick it on eBay with no reserve.

I don't need to sell it, I keep forgetting its there lol but it is taking up a lot space!

From what I can find it is CDB and was used from 89-93 in the legacy RS.

Can you post the eBay link if you decide to go that way plz?

Quick update, it does indeed have those lines running around the starter area......my phone only had 5% battery so wouldn't allow me to take a photo lol. I'll strip the heads off next Saturday and take a load of photos of the bores etc

Pulled the heads off the motor this morning, bores look perfect to me you can still see honing marks in the bores, no scoring at all, this is out of a completely standard estate car so I'm assuming it's not had a very hard life.

Another heads up, make sure you get some oil on those bores to stop them going rusty. :thumb:
