1994 impreza sti
Got a starting issue with my classic 94 sti.
Drove about 30miles on Sunday, parked on a hill and the car wouldn't restart. Had to get recovered.... first time since buying the car it's been brilliantly reliable. Just done two track days. Check fault codes on esl and non on there... and check light reds no codes Ignition looks like it's working on cranking Checked fuel into and out of fuel rails . About half a jam jar when priming Spark seems a bit weak _ new age coil packs conversion ( hard to check) Does not make any difference if maf is connected or not. Even tried a mafless map. Checked cam belt not snapped Cleaned surfaces of cam and crank sensors. Also stopped the cam sensor Cleaned all electrical connection in the engine bay and under the rear seat Anyone got a suggestion of what next?? Tearing the little hair out I have..... Next stage I think will be compression test |
Tried an ecu reset?
Checked the battery? Checked earths? Might be worth taking the spark plugs out and clean or replace with new. Are you just set up for running 1 map and have checked you are on the correct map when you plug into esl? |
Had battery tested by aa and also recharged.
Will check the earth's tonight. I can see the one to the engine where are the others? I only have one map on the ecu so don't think that could be it. I think I may take out the pants alarm/immobiliser that is fitted as this may be at fault. Thanks for the reply. |
Have a search on here for earth points, think there are about 8. Starter, inlet manifold, ecu, suspension strut etc...
As you have to go through a procedure to switch maps then like you say it's unlikely you have swapped maps by accident. Dodgy immobiliser might be a good call, they usually cut the fuel pump but worth a check. |
Did you check fuel rails after it didn't start?

I've never heard of a fuel system getting an air blockage but I could be wrong :wonder:
Another thing to check would be fuses, especially the SB ones and the fusible link in the engine bay fusebox(always check fuses for continuity with a meter) |
Still having problems
Checked all of the above .
But out of the four ignition control wires on the ecu only 2 have a pulse . The other two are 0 v. Is this correct or should they all have a pulse? Chrid |
check coolant temp sender, they where a issue on on the early cars,
or maff another pain on the early models |
Ok will check as have another one.
Will keep you posted and thanks for the info. Chris |
Have you tried knock sensor or cam sensor I bet it's one of those
