knackered engine? vid included

So I have just gone to bring my car hom from work, its a short 6 mile trip. i pootled along to the shell garage and filled up with v power.

then drove steadily home at 30-40mph, came to a small part and accelerated in 3rd a little, maybe upto 50-55mph, not hard though, like slowly through the revs, prob 3k rpm ish maybe 3.5?

Then engine started making a big flapping noise, immediatly slowed down, pulled over thinking the worst. couldnt see anything mate reckons it could be exhaust, im thinking engines knackered. I drove home then at 15mph ish in 2nd / 3rd gear and parked up outside.

Cant see anything loose or that stands out.

any help please i havnt a clue!

Sounds like bottom end failure, but don't write it off just yet.
Could be a number of things,1st thing I would check is the Cambelt, possibly slipped a tooth or 2? Tensioner come loose? One of the idlers collapsed?
Also drop the oil through a cloth,if it has spun a bearing then you will see signs of it in the oil.
Also check fanbelt,and aircon pulley

posted this on another forum and got the same answer, bottom end failure.

Really gutted only had it 5 days! just had brembos on the front and brand new godspeeds on the rear today.

Cant afford a rebuild so guess ill be putting it up for sale. I will check the oil though, hopefully tomorrow.

Does sound like bottom end failure but i had same sound on my old bugeye and it turned out that one of the coilpacks had come loose.

ossett2k2 13 September 2016 10:15 PM

You any good with a spanner?
If it does sadly turn out to be bottom end failure then you could always buy a short block or even a long engine and fix yours up.
They're not the worst cars to work on and if you can do the work yourself then it's possible to get it back on the road for well under a grand.

Good call that :thumb:
Loose spark plug can also sound like this.

FR0STY 13 September 2016 10:21 PM

also being told it could be headers.

I am decent with a spanner, but have a bad back and cant be bent over the car or laid under it etc. And to be honest I dont want to throw anymore money at it.

Hoping I can find someone local to doncaster to pop and have a look for some beer tokens!

There isnt much noise at tick over but it gets louder as you rev, maybe tomorrow ill get another video revving it past 2k rpm

Its booked in monday at richard henry for 3 x prosport gauges fitting, full service including cambelt and a full remap by andrew car. I will have to cancel this tomorrow :/

Before i brought my current blob i viewed loads of cars. Viewed a silver blob and sounded sweet as a nut on tick over but as i held throttle body open i heard the dreaded knock. The seller claimed he had never noticed it  how much does the car owe you and how much would you be willing to spend to sort it? For a decent rebuild you will be looking at around 3k but try matty (m.b developments) for an sti lump out of a breaker. Buts thats if its worst case and your engine is goosed. Avoid driving till you get it confirmed. Hope you get it sorted tho mate :thumb:

FR0STY 13 September 2016 10:35 PM

realistically as it is it owed me £2100

It has done 108l and has had a new engine at 70k according to paperwork / service book.

Has all the sti stuff, intercooler, turbo, injectors, uprated pump etc. milltek exhaust system decat with cat in the boot. BC racing coilovers.

has brembo fronts with disks and pads done 1k miles

has godspeed rears disks and pads done 6 miles.

I dont know what a non runner goes for, but I could maybe get most back in parts?

No doubt you could pull your money back. £450 for brembos,£100ish for intercooler, £100ish injectors,£300ish turbo,£200ish coilovers etc then there is the pannels depending condition.

just been out and got my hand under with the engine running, I can feel a small blow on tick over coming from around some pipes, I didnt test if I got any extra when revving due to being on my own. I will get the mrs to rev is slightly later for me.

This is where the blow was from.

Another video of the noise:

Think its worth me taking it to someone with ramps? I live on a busy street with no drive, other option is I drive it 6 miles back to work then look at it!

malevolent_sti 14 September 2016 09:54 AM

It does sound like bottom end failure to me, but I would have thought the "ticking" would happen even at idle, your motor sounds OK just running at idle. I'm not a master mechanic mind you.

ossett2k2 14 September 2016 10:02 AM

Have you checked the spark plugs yet to see if ones come loose?

MOTORS S GT 14 September 2016 10:12 AM

Sort the exhaust blowing first, you really cannot tell from this vid.

FR0STY 14 September 2016 03:08 PM

hole the size of a 1 pence piece in the bottom of the header, its rusted through :/

imprezagaz 14 September 2016 04:13 PM

scubbay 15 September 2016 08:08 AM
