hi guys,
i have just got my first 2005 jdm impreza but it only comes with one electronic key. I know you can get blank keys on ebay etc but from what i understand they don't work with cars with electronic keys? any help appreciated thanks :thumb: |

I'm sure the jdm keys are not electronic and you can have one of these

well thats exactly what i was going to buy but the key has a lock and unlock button on it and thought maybe it has to be a chip type key? Might be worth just getting one of these then and hope its right. thanks like this one - http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=667909# |

I take it doesn't have an alarm fitted yet? As the alarm would trigger your locking instead of your key mate get one fitted by an approved alarm installer must be loads where your at?

So the key is just a remote to lock/unlock the doors and has nothing to do with immobilising the car.

mine jdm has clifford fob for alarm and also had key with lock/unlock buttons which I changed for titanium sti same as above on the picture without any issues, just buy and get it cut you don't need any key coding

Your JDM key is the same as mine and has a 4D62 transponder chip inside it. You won't be able to start the car without the key with the transponder in it. The transponder is just a simple RFID electronic coded tag that is read by the ECU in the car via a received mounted on the ignition barrel. When the transponder is close, the immobiliser circuit opens. The only way of coding a new key chip is to do it through a Subaru main dealer, they will reprogram the ECU to accept the new RFID tag number and it will work as the original.
I purchased a replacement key and swapped the electronics and transponder into the new flip key shell if that helps. You can buy the transponder chips online, I'm just about to do this to my car to resurrect an old ignition key. You won't be able to use the nice sexy titanium STI key as it doesn't have a transponder mounted inside. It will also need machining down as it's too thick. |
