ABS light on any ideas

Hi All

Just had new front and rear discs and pads fitted to my 2005 STi Widetrack and whilst driving home noticed the ABS light was on ?

Any ideas as to why after a brake disc and pad change and what should I do ?

Russ

moved/damaged abs sensor or pick up/tone ring ?

there's a 6 pin diagnostic block under the dash you can use to flash a code up - sometimes it's taped waaaaay up in there.

1..C..2
3.4.5.6

Looks like that where C is the little clip - there are 2 test probes with it (also taped up, just like bare wire) shove them into #3 and #6 (doesn't matter which way round) and then turn the ignition on. ABS light will flash out a code then ignition off and unplug.

At a guess though it's going to be something related to the area you were working on so as above likely damaged ABS sensor or the ring was snapped and has got worse when the disk was removed.

I've got this too but mine goes on and off intermittently. And I recently had the discs and pads all round done.

Took the car out yesterday for a good run, started her up and no ABS light, good 30 min town drive and no light at all....

Hopefully that's you sorted. Mine seems to go off with ignition off but comes on at about 70mph when I'm accelerating!

Id be worried if it is iffy, when the ABS light is on you will get no ABS assistance if you needed it, typically the light means the ABS system has been deactivated.

I did a few very hard breaking stops and no lock up ? Just strange that when the discs and pads where first changed the light was on but now no light at all ?

I'm waiting on my mechanic who done the discs and pads to investigate. Would any fault codes be thrown up for abs errors?

1509joe 31 July 2016 12:25 PM

ABS generally has two test modes. 1. When you get in and turn ignition on light goes out after all electrical systems register as ok. 2 Then you start travelling and if every thing is ok light stays off if it comes back on you have a mechanical problem ie. Tone ring, dirty sensors or VSS etc. To cap it all off jump in turn key on if light goes off electrical end of things is generally ok. SOME systems need the light turned off with diagnostic equipment.

2005 sti type UK don't have the diagnostic block with the pins

jonnyboy82 31 July 2016 05:20 PM

Some are we saying no fault codes will show then?

1509joe 31 July 2016 07:21 PM

No they should be stored in the ECU or ABS controller but both are usually accessible through the OBD port.

gazney101 31 July 2016 10:23 PM

That's correct, the abs codes are accessible through the obd port but only with a Subaru select monitor as far as I know.

I tried several diagnostic tools and non would connect, even a very expensive snap on code reader couldn't pull the codes.

In the end I went to AS performance and Alyn pulled the code in around 30seconds with his select monitor.

You should check your fluid reservoir as there's a small level sensor on there that can get stuck and will intermittently bring the light on

Just took mine for another run including duel carriageway and as soon as it hit 70mph the ABS light came on again grrrrr why only at 70mph ?

jonnyboy82 03 August 2016 09:18 PM

Crazy isn't it! That's exactly when mine comes on then stays off until I hit 70 odd! Funnily enough my mechanic has shunned responsibility so I need to check it myself when I get a minute.

would a vagcom cable and free ssm work?

JDM_Stig 04 August 2016 11:21 AM

have you checked the work you did and made sure the actual sensor is correctly positioned

jonnyboy82 04 August 2016 11:31 AM

I need to check this weekend but how do I know which to check and which way it should be? Bearing in mind his was done by my so called recommended mechanic!

Nope

Steve001 07 August 2016 11:11 AM

Last week my daughters car (bug wrx) had the ABS light on for no reason, fluids ok etc etc also fault codes stored on ecu

Changed a rear brake light bulb that had blown and it's never come back :)
