New member - thinking about buying a Subaru

Hello all,

Been looking for a while now, very tempted on buying a Subaru or Evo.

Just have a couple of questions if thats OK.

Firstly lots of Scoobys I'm viewing are stating "Engine rebuilt", before looking at buying one I thought the engines were bullet proof.

Why would engines need rebuilding before hiting even 80k? Is this abuse from owner who hasn't serviced the car at all?

I'm looking for a WRX STI around 56 plate ish, is there any common faults I need to lookout for?

Thanks for your help

Ah the good old 2.5 thortans engine, i'd be lookng for one with a rebuild, thread will explain more.

Subaru 2.0 engines are genreally bullet proof although like any car depends how its been treated, if its been thrashed most of its life with poor serving and genraly not looked after then you can't expect much at all.

While the engines are tough (especially the 2.0 sti, I believe the JDM is the toughest of all) a lot of the cars to get a hard life, even if they are well treated in terms of servicing. The other issue is that they are so easy to tune that it's fairly easy to compromise the life of the engine. And the other consideration is that the last of the new ages are approaching 10 years old now.
But treated relatively well, and without crazy power then the engines and drive trains are very, very tough.
Stuff to look out for.
Leaking rocker covers. Knocking suspension (shocks). Binding 4 pot brakes on wrx.
Need a really thick folder of service history from a decent garage. If any work has been done then you need to see receipts.
But they are great cars, and there are a lot of obsessive owners who treat them fantastically well. There are also a few owners who don't...

The majority of fubar'd 2.5 that have had a rebuild by Subaru are normally FSH without mods. And there is no time scale or mileage specific time for them to go.

I wish you all the best as you may be one of the lucky ones :thumb:

I think post 2009 or 2010 there was a map update that helped eliminate some of the failures on the 2.5 engine.
All the same be careful of mapping a 10 year old car with standard internals. Make sure you take it to a reputable subaru specialist mapper. Be prepared to travel.

When you say new models, does that include the brand new WRX STi?

jayallen 22 July 2016 05:17 PM

You bought a car from that clown at Rotherham Scoobies, I wouldn't trust to him fill a washer bottle....Did you actually state he mapped it?

Have a search of the forum to find out more about this workman ship, you will literally laugh your bollox off, well maybe you won't but you may cry.
