V4 ESL options

Hi, i'm going to be fitting an ESL board to the ECU on my car but ideally looking to retain my original should i wish to revert to back to standard - car is a 1998 V4 sti
I know both the 6S (V3 sti) and 75 (V4 sti) ECU's are 3 plug - so here's my question -
If i cannot source a 75 ECU would a 6S do as it will be getting mapped with the ESL board fitted anyway?
Thanks in advance for any help given :)

Hi bud I have a 98 uk turbo not sure if my ecu is compatible but It's a daughter board Ecu , esl mapped by Duncan graham . Switchable maps currently running maffless

bludgod 27 June 2016 10:11 PM

yes you can switch between the two, however you'll have to move some pins round on the wiring harness to suit (some of the sensors are swapped about just). Makes no difference to how the ESL runs and they will send you the info on which wires to repin.

I emailed ESL recently with this very question.

The 75 and 6S ECU are essentially the same ECU. Same plugs / pin layouts etc. Identical hardware I believe.

Only difference is the 6S is mapped for a vf23, the 75 for a vf24.

So yes, you can use either ECU (as it will need to be mapped for the ESL regardless).

I thought it was the 8S and the 6S that were the same ecu, 6S was for Euro models?

8s UK
1s wrx
6s STI

Jaysz 01 July 2016 01:47 PM

My sti ra has a 6s ecu

chiefinspector 01 July 2016 01:59 PM

6s = v3 sti
75 = v4 sti

These two JDM ECUs are physically identical, only difference is the base maps. All pins and plugs are the same.

8s = uk Turbo 2000 ECU

This is different to the 6s/75, cam / crank / pump sensors need swapping etc.

I exchanged a stock 6s ECU for a chipped 7s ecu np. I have my factory 7s ecu incase I want to revert back to stock to sell.

Whats the euro version of 8S then? Sure we had a thread about this sometime back Rich.

Not sure on the eudm Jay?

I just listed the ones I've owned,I was thinking my Terzo was V3 but it was V4 so the 1S and 6S are both JDM V3 and the 8S is UK V4 (not sure on the UK V3)
both V3&4 have the same plugs tho, apart from a few pin locations from JDM to UK.
Andy Stevens had the full list of classic ecus on eBay but don't think he sells on there anymore.

scoobyricht 02 July 2016 04:14 PM

Ive seen a 9s which is the euro equivalent of the 8s but the case is opposite handed

jaygsi 02 July 2016 05:50 PM

That might be the one. Might be 9S will do some googling as I sold an ECU to some guy in euro once.

TylerD529 03 July 2016 11:55 AM

Thanks for all the replies - sourced a 6S so it'll save swapping pins on the loom - won't be fitted until it's on the dyno to be mapped so all good.
Thanks again all the input was helpful

alstare84 03 July 2016 10:03 PM

I confirm that 8s and 9s are equivalent but with different case.
Infact I bought from UK, fitted ESL by Andy and swapped the case when arrived to me.

guys

just purchased a v2 jdm sti with a esl daughterboard

currently only boosting 0.5 bar so looks too be in low boost map

can you advise how to switch maps or is there a way of resetting

regards

Rodney

rodney you have to get the ECU mapped to suit your car -if you didn't buy the ESL programming cable you'll have to take it to someone who has it to get setup.

ossett2k2 19 August 2016 06:37 PM

Did you buy the car with ESL already on the car and mapped?

1. Throttle up, Ignition On, wait 5 seconds.
2. Ignition Off.
3. Throttle down, Ignition On.
4. CEL will flash once or twice at you.

The Rig 19 August 2016 07:44 PM

0.5 bar is standard actuator pressure , before fiddling with the Map or switching maps ( that's even if there are 2 maps that differ to each other etc ) check the Restrictor pill is in place

rodneysti 20 August 2016 08:05 AM

Hi thanks for the info

Any one have a pic of where the restrictor pill is situated

Thanks for your help in advance

Rodney

ossett2k2 20 August 2016 10:21 AM

Are you still on standard 2 port BCS ?
If so the pill is as pic....

The suspense is killing me

rodneysti 29 August 2016 09:54 AM

update

esl chip is an old version (no wswitchable map)

Duncan and the guys at surrey rolling road had a look and rest the boost controller and its a health 298bhp boosting now at 1.4bar

been told that good for a 20year old V2

so what's the next step

new up to date ESL chip and remap again but with TD05 top entry will I get much more out of it
