you dont want solid alloy links but the correct ball joint type kinks to suit the alloy lower arm

ossett2k2 01 July 2016 11:42 AM

I fit the solid whiteline drop links to my old car with alloy arms, they were not a good fit,but then I'm sure I recently read a thread on here saying whiteline solid ones do fit and they come with extra washer/spacers? Might be wrong tho :wonder:

jaygsi 01 July 2016 11:58 AM

Hi yes i bought some special drop links mean't for alloy wishbones. And cookstar said i needed washers for under bottom balljoint bolt aswell.

So i got a

Alloy wishbones
Alloy Lower Arm Ball Joint Cone
Bottom Arm Rear Bushes already fitted to wishbones
Front Drop Links for alloy wish bones

ossett2k2 01 July 2016 12:07 PM

Did you get solid or the ball joint type drop links jay?

53 02 July 2016 06:34 PM

Genuine ones are best :)

ossett2k2 02 July 2016 06:44 PM

As 53 said genuine are best, but the ones you have are also ball joint type and not solid so they will fit.

jaygsi 02 July 2016 06:44 PM

Ah pants. Always prefer genuine ones. Can't wait now for them to be delivered. Need them fitted for mot.

ossett2k2 02 July 2016 06:46 PM

Solid ones like the one in the thread below are what mine looked like without spacers.

jaygsi 02 July 2016 10:16 PM

Ok cheers. Not had a luck at ones on the car yet. Hope these will be ok. Going start on them Tomos.

What Torque do the bolts need to be tightened up to?

Ball joint bottom nut behind hub 28? front wish bone bolt 75? and rear wishbone bolts 150?

Codders 05 July 2016 10:41 AM

Front Wishbone

Tightening torque: N·m (kg-m, ft-lb)

T1: 29±5 (3.0±0.5, 21.7±3.6)
T2: 44±6 (4.5±0.6, 32.5±4.3)
T3: 98±15 (10.0±1.5, 72±11)
T4: 196±25 (20.0±2.5, 145±18)
T5: 245±49 (25.0±5.0, 181±36)

https://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y9...ff/Unknown.png

The picture shows steel arm, but the torque values are the same for alloy arms.

Exact instructions for balljoint:

INSTALLATION
1) Install the ball joint onto housing.
Tightening torque (Bolt):
50 N·m (5.1 kgf-m, 37 ft-lb)
CAUTION:
Do not apply grease to tapered portion of ball stud.
2) Connect the ball joint to transverse link.
Tightening torque (Castle nut):
STi model: 30 N·m (3.1 kgf-m, 22 ft-lb)
Except STi model: 40 N·m (4.1 kgf-m, 30 ft-lb)
3) Retighten the castle nut further within 60° until a slot in castle nut is aligned with the hole in ball stud end, then insert a new cotter pin and bend it around castle nut.
4) Install the front wheel.

where is that from? it doesnt say the torque figures on opposed forces does it?

Codders 05 July 2016 11:03 AM

No, OpposedForces list only part numbers.

This particular info is from 98-99 Impreza manual, but I compared it to 2004 STI and the torque values for the front suspension are the same.

jaygsi 05 July 2016 01:32 PM

Thats great cheers :thumb:

All done cheers, was a complete pain in the rear end, had to take it to a friends , as the bolt that holds the ball joint in was so tight, it needed heating up quite alot.
