16k?

I'm going nuts trying to work out what I want ..

So I do a lot of motorway and I'm bored with the standard 2L Insignia engine.. I claim fuel so am not too worried about that.

Been looking at loads of cars, can't find anything that ticks all the boxes .

Heated seats
Sat Nav
Bluetooth
I like the twin exhaust (one on either side)

Punchy engine, sub 7 seconds if possible ..

TECHNOPUG 23 June 2016 02:43 PM

You get your fuel paid for by your employer and have £16k to spend on a car?

pimmo2000 23 June 2016 03:17 PM

well so far so good you've read my post ..

TECHNOPUG 23 June 2016 03:36 PM

In that case, why aren't you cruising about in a V12 S class Merc? Or a 750i? Or an M5/6?Or a V10/W12 Phaeton? Or S6/8/RS6/? Or any other manner of huge engined, massive-depreciating saloons?

pimmo2000 23 June 2016 03:57 PM

I don't know what I want .. it needs to fit my two kids in, be comfortable on the motorway and not be massively expensive to insure and run (petrol aside)

TECHNOPUG 23 June 2016 04:12 PM

RWD? 4WD? Saloon? Estate? 4x4?

I don't know what your idea of massively expensive is.

Have a look here for starters:

pimmo2000 23 June 2016 04:36 PM

nothing jumps out at me

TECHNOPUG 23 June 2016 04:42 PM

Really? In that case, have you considered a Vauxhall Insignia?

pimmo2000 23 June 2016 04:43 PM

that's a thought ...

The Pink Ninja 23 June 2016 04:57 PM

Rs4 or even S4

poffer1 23 June 2016 06:41 PM

Something nondescript, well built and fast.....if you can get over the looks (or find an estate version) what about the 3.6 litre Skoda? I was surprised at how fast that was. The engine is relentless with power everywhere.

DoZZa 23 June 2016 08:24 PM

Comes down to maintenance really .. I'm looking at the audi a6 3.0 tdi allroad quattro, seems to have power, decent comfort and the reviews are excellent.

Ticks all the boxes .. any reason I should avoid?

Avoid because its diesel?... If you can claim your mileage why not go for an RS4 / RS4 advant. It'll have comfort and speed. Plus looks good too.

cuprajake 24 June 2016 09:03 AM

New shape s3 saloon if there in budget yet

taylor85 24 June 2016 09:46 AM

Second hand they are around 15 and the 230 new is way over 20k

taylor85 24 June 2016 10:14 AM

one on forecourt near me for 19995 , looks a bit rough so might been abused ! we paid 21k for a ex demo dsg at work,

The yeti is also pretty good, they do a 4x4 similar spec to a vrs and is quite good on the motorway

The 3.0 TDI sounds good and is relatively reliable.

I have just got a 2011 335i M sport coupe dual clutch with 35000 miles immaculate with high spec for £17.3k. Cheaper if you get saloon. It tunes easily to 360 BHP and is good in the dry but annoying in the wet. The newer N55 twin scroll single turbo from mid 2010 has fewer reliability issues.

Rear wheel worries me, I travel a lot and see many, many BMW's trapped when it snows .. I've been ok (so far) in my FWD's and of course kicked ass in my Impreza, the Audi is awd :wonder:

I have to say, even with the miles that car looks fantastic!! Though I can understand your thinking. Hopefully something with lower miles comes up within budget :)

I am happy to give up a little steering feel and turn in on a road car, so prefer an Audi. However, winter tyres have more effect than AWD. Rain is the bigger issue in the UK with fast RWD I think.

If you can get a BiTDI 3.0 Audi that would be nice?

Cat D RS4 of that age and mileage will not be wallet friendly for running costs and resale. They also aren't that fast, especially with age.

Tidy, well cared for low mileage example right here for a hell of a lot less than £14K if you are interested.

pimmo2000 24 June 2016 05:38 PM

lol thanks mate, but I've settled on the Audi .. thanks chaps .. pointed me at Audi's and insurance vs running costs, I'm going for the A6 allroad 3l 240bph.

You know to check the air suspension closely, and watch out for parts of the "dot matrix" instrument display which don't work as they should, I think either is quite a costly replacement.

Nice car though I like how the all-road looks.

Think both of those issues are more common (only?) on the C5 A6 Allroad rather than the newer (C6/C7) models.

As a daily driver, an Allroad A6 is a great choice I reckon.. ticks all the boxes for me anyway, look forward to seeing what you end up with. :thumb:

Bought this .. have to say the stupid silver wings don't do it for me, they will be getting sprayed but other than that .. pretty impressed.

Collecting tomorrow
