Classic Subaru Clutch fluid and Diff

Hiya

Need to do a clutch fluid change. Going to use
Motul DOT 5.1 Brake Fluid Long Life Fully Synthetic

How much do I need?

Also what do I use to change diff oil? and how much?

What is in there at the moment? You cannot mix 5.1 and 4.0 etc

oh and which coolant.

Car is a 97 Type R

Unless you make a complete and utter mess of bleeding the system, a single 1L bottle of fluid will be more than enough to refill the cluth. The reservoir is tiny, and other than that all it consists of is around a meter of pretty small bore pipework and a couple of quite small cylinders.

All the diffs on these cars will take any good quality 75W/90 gear oil, but as for capacity, you haven't said which diff, so can't answer that.

For coolant, I've always used the Halfords 'Advanced' own-brand stuff, mixed 50/50, and never had a problem. Easy to source, not stupidly expensive, and does the job.

To answer the questions:

1) Until it reaches the max level on the dipstick (not the person filling it the one that screws to the unit)
2) Other oil of the same / similar type - you may need to flush is changing the types if not compatible
3) Again until it reaches max on the dipstick.....

HTH.

Hi

DOT 3, DOT4 and DOT 5.1 all mix fine, but DOT 5 will not mix with those. DOT 5 is not the kind of thing you'd use in an Impreza though anyway, it's low performance stuff, generally used in classic vehicles.

Cheers

Hi

That's fine for the brakes and you'll need about a litre.

The diff needs a 75w-90 GL5 oil.

The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Red Line 75w-90 GL5, Motul Gear 300 and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Gulf Syngear are also good choices. That takes 0.8L.

Cheers

Tim
