You keep on knocking but you cant come in!

Car is doing something weird!

I have a knocking coming from under the car, its a physical knock, as in something is actually coming into contact with the floor of the car. Noise is coming from the transmission tunnel area near the gear stick.

This only happens when either coasting or going over bumps in the road.

When car is under load it stops, when stationary there is no knocking.

I first noticed this a couple of weeks ago, it was quite apparent when driving on bumpy roads, but then it stopped for a while and I thought nothing of it. But today its back and even smaller bumps in the road are causing the knock.

Something is obviously loose. But what could it be?

I think its either a gearbox mount loose, exhaust (but noise is coming from left side of transmission tunnel so unlikely), loose driveshaft.

Its too wet to get under the car and have a look today so wanted to see if anyone had an idea as to what it might be.

Any further ideas?

Forgot about the donut, ill inspect that.

When you say top mounts, do you mean suspension top mounts?

Ill check those too. Interestingly, the knocking becomes worse if I put the diff in lock mode. So maybe its the diff bushes.

These work a treat easy install and cheap mod.

Look at the bolts holding the gearbox cradle too. I reckon its more anti roll bar bushes or links though tbh.

Its an odd one. Went for a nice drive today, about 30 miles, no knocking, not one.

Mixed roads and mixed driving. Really is odd!

OK, so the knocking has returned.

It appears that driving through a puddle can trigger it. Its very strange. Almost sounds like there is something loose inside the gearbox. But why would driving through a puddle trigger it?

Noise seems to emanate just forward of the gear stick.

But the car drives fine, gear changes are smooth.

I just dont get it!

Gearbox mount or gearbox cradle bushes?

I need to get under the car and have a proper look really.

Just a bit dubious about getting under there again after what happened with the DPD driver hitting the car and it falling off the axle stands!!!
