To lap or not to lap? Valve Question
I have decided to clean the heads and valves up while I'm rebuilding the engine.

Of course do it while your there,
Use coarse then fine, can be a pain with the little sucker tool sliding off the valve but you will see it cleaning up the seat, Just make sure u give it a proper clean and don't leave any paste behind. |

You might have to get the exhaust valves faced and seats cut looking at the condition of them Rich especially as they have been running tight clearances - give them a light lap with some fine to see if they clean up first.

Do it, doesn't take long unless you are lapping a new valve and it ensures your valves are sealing properly. I always check for a good seal by filling the combustion chambour with diesel or brake cleaner and making sure no fluid runs past the valve seat. Make sure you check your valve clearances after as they may tighten up.

6 hours cleaning and lapping,and that's just one head lol What a ball ache! Doesn't look too bad now tho,used corse&fine on EX and just lightly did IN with fine. Valves going back in now then on with the other head. Hopefully not to far away now to rebuilding :thumb: |

Far from mint but hope it will do,put some carb cleaner in the chambers and nothing leaking so looks like they sealed up ok :)

Bet it was fun :) Just want to get the fooking thing running now. Will tackle the other head next time I'm off work. Apart from wrapping the headers(not looking forward to that) it should be a simple case of bolting all back together and dropping it back in,and if it doesn't work after all this then I'm gonna set it on fire hahaha!!! |

Looks all good then if it's its dry behind the the valves. Do the other head the same then set the clearances. A good tip for wrapping your headers is to wet the wrap first then tie it off entry six inches with lock wire using proper lock wire pliers. Good luck, it's a PIA, Rich.

Looking good Rich. I had fun lapping the valves on my mates clio 172 after it bent 10 valves! I lapped them till they looked good then used engineers blue to check and had to lap them some more for a good seat.

Will be checking clearance as soon as I fit the heads,shouldn't be too far away from what I had as Mick sorted me a selection of shims and I recently did that,not sure how much tighter lapping bring them? EL headers,trying to think of best way to do them,I have two 50ft rolls and 10 metal ties,might need more ties? Recently read a good thread from Harvey about wrapping some nice tips :) |

Stainless ties are great if you can get hold of the wee gun that tightens them properly.
I found them useless without it. |
Recon I might go for the wire,do you know what gauge is used?
We have a book stitcher at work and loads of rolls of steel wire,thinking I could use this if it's thick enough? |
Just go on eBay and buy a roll of Motorsport lock wire with the proper pliers, they come as a set don't cost much. You get loads it's perfect for the job with loads spare.
