2016 Golf GTi

Got one of these the other day. I quite like it so far. It's definitely a better car than the Mkiv 25th Anniversary Golf GTi I had some time ago.

The in car entertainment system is great, mirrors your iPhone or Android phone to the car's touchscreen. The tartan interior is a bit weird but I don't mind it.

Not really had a chance to test it out on any twisty roads (not so many of those here in the middle of Dallas) but it does feel fairly competent and solid but not jarring suspension. Little bit more oomph than the old Mkiv with 210bhp and 250something torques. Pulls well enough to annoy some of the 'Muricans in 5.8 litre HEMI Dodge Ram's etc. with a 0-60 a smidge under 6 seconds.

Sorry about the dusty car, it was clean as fook then it rained and it seems that the rain here is always bloody sandy.

I had one and sold it 12 months later. Had issue with the gearbox which the dealer and VW didn't give a sh!t about. Was in the dealers for weeks on end.

In the end they gave up, blamed me for not being able to change gear properly (even though every time I went out with one of their mechanics it happened when they were driving it) yet when I wasn't there, there was nothing wrong with it !!!!

In the end, I stuffed it in the garage at home for a couple months till I sold it. Bought an S3 Saloon instead. Much better car.

Nice mate. Great in black too. Still one of the best hot hatches, if not the quickest, there is just something nice about them :thumb:

LSherratt 03 May 2016 09:33 PM

Look's a cool car but I know nothing about Golfs apart from 1980 MK1's :lol1:.

I've got pretty good cover from the VW garage and they seem to be a little more on the caring side in the US (read that as 'they don't want to get sued'). I never had a problem with the Mkiv and this one feels pretty solid so far. We'll see how it goes :)

Maybe you just can't change gears properly....:thumb: Joke! :lol1: :D

What was the issue with the gearbox anyway? This one seems smooth as feck and I specifically went for manual over DSG or auto or whatever as it's like having a built in security device as most 'Muricans can't drive stick :D :lol1:

Thanks bud. Yeah I like it in black and it came with tints all round, which will be nice when it is 40-45 degrees. Its a shame that I will eventually have to put a front plate on when they are dispatched in a couple of months, looks nice without :)

5th VeeDub I will have owned and not one of them has missed a beat so far (touches wood) :)

Thank you, sir. :) You know what, I would happily have a Mk1 though :)

Thanks. Yeah, I like it and most people in the US drive auto boxes, so it's nice to be different.
The dealership I got mine from have just been purchased by a chap called Clay Cooley, so they were desperate for clients to get going (especially after the emissions 'scandal'), means they are bending over backwards to give me the best service possible. Which is nice. :)

fat-thomas 04 May 2016 02:11 PM

lovely car, i nearly bought a golf gtd but the small boot put me off.
i really like the dsg box i cant understand poeples issues with semi automatic boxes they are the future.

lozgti1 04 May 2016 03:29 PM

Honestly FT.It ruins my driver enjoyment completely. And that's what it should be all about.

That beautiful golf gti should be driven by you.Not push and go.Just imho

lozgti1 04 May 2016 03:32 PM

And,hey, the Tartan interior.Bit special in the GTI;)

It randomly wouldn't select 5th gear, either going up or down the box.

I have a flappy paddle car and I love it .
I was sceptical after reading stuff and came to the conclusion 50% was jealousy as people can't afford it and the other 50% have never tried it.

I honestly don't see a down side. I don't think I'll ever get another manual.
Hill start assist is a must then it's great.
I know in auto they shift up a bit quick for fuel economy but in s or manual it's great

fat-thomas 04 May 2016 04:15 PM

As for the tartan interior I looked at a few golf r and the leather creases very quickly on the bolster hence a few have started to avoid it.

Peedee 04 May 2016 04:19 PM

Yeah, I was sceptical about flappy paddles.....until I drove one. I'd have another any day of the week!

lozgti1 04 May 2016 07:35 PM

Never use my paddles:o

Then you are missing the point if dsg.
Put it in manual use paddles

lozgti1 04 May 2016 07:50 PM

Mainly just keep it in sport.

But there are three ways to change gear as it is....

I will have a play with the paddles ...really...

lozgti1 04 May 2016 07:53 PM

What car you got btw FT?

Cheers, yeah the boot is a little small but plenty space with the seats down. The missus went a bit nuts as we have three dogs (GSD, Pitbull, Weird little Rat Terrier) and I was supposed to get an SUV :D

Yeah, I do like the retro reference.

Ok, good to know. This box feels slick and tight but you never know! I'll watch for that.

Yeah, it's generally a nice place to be. A million miles from the old days of sitting in my classic scoob but a car like that would just be pointless nowadays.

I genuinely would have an old Mk1/2 but, here it seems that if you don't have a new car you are basically a second class citizen. Daft but it's like Surrey on steriods....

nik52wrx 09 May 2016 07:55 AM

I bought a new Golf R with dsg two months ago and 90% of the time use the paddles, very responsive and always does what you want it to do.
Launch control in full auto is pretty impressive too.

Love the retro looking seats. Front looks nice but not keen on how they have done the rear

Yeah, I love the front, too. I prefer the rear to some previous versions but I still love the classic boxy Mk1's and 2's :)
