Any sparkies on here?

Is it possible to get a single, one way switch with neon for a simple domestic light circuit?

I'm buggered if I can find one. I bought a one way switch with supply connections and thought I might be able to get it to work....but no!

I have a large under stairs cupboard with the switch in the hall and it continually gets left on, because you can't tell if it's on or not.

Any ideas? Thanks

Bash a PIR sensor in to automatically turn off the light.

Needs a neutral at it , so no. You could get a time delay switch (gives enough time to go into cupboard, but will switch off after a while) but they aren't pretty. Alternatively, get a sensor light fitting , or wire the existing light through a sensor , and just leave the switch on all the time and let the sensor switch it on and off.

Thanks guys. I'll give the sensor a go.

Think I have seen a light switch one gang with built in neon, also mk do a neon plate. Not certain whether u need a neutral at switch though, probably would. Other than that like what is mentioned above.

you can buy a lit surround that you can add.

For anything at the switch to light up it'll need a neutral.

It can be done, I've done it in France.

I'm still none the wiser !:lol1:

how do neon voltage testers work with no neutral then ? lol

Wurzel 28 April 2016 03:48 PM

Yes it is I have one for my attic light when the light is on the neon lights up and when the light is off the neon is off.

alcazar 28 April 2016 05:50 PM

You basically wire the neon across the switch. When it's off, enough current lreaks to light the neon, but not the bulb. When it's on, the tewo sides of the switch are at the same voltage and the neon is off. try it, it works. I have two switches wired like this in France, mainly so as to be able to find the switch in the dark..

CharlySkunkWeed 28 April 2016 06:11 PM

Ah , so if the neon is lit then the light is off ?

alcazar 28 April 2016 07:18 PM

Yes, in those cases, but wire it to the other terminal of a two-way switch, it comes on with the light. I have two of those too for cellar lights.

It works with neons, but the newer LED one I bought needed a neutral.
