Clunking noise

I own w reg impreza turbo 2000 UK model and when I reverse and steer to the left or right I get a clunking noise I can hear and also feel through the car.it doesn't do it when I get into the car for the first time of that day it starts maybe after half hour or so.I'm no expert as it's first subaru I've owned and had it a couple of months.I first thought it maybe 1 of the different needing an oil change but who knowsaid. So any advice would be great
Thanxs

It doesn't do it when reversing in straight line at all only when turned steering wheel.......does that still sound like it could be that?
Any way of checking?

Yep very common on that age of 5 speed box, does the gearbox oil look dirty?
Only real way of checking for sure is poping the back off the box and slipping out the centre diff.
Bet the big circlip has come off the centre diff, if it has it will need a new diff as they are not servicable.
Pretty easy do do if your mechanicly minded and you don't need to take the box out!
