Info on v3 Heads please.
Car is a v3 STI
I'm after some info on these heads please. Do the buckets have the shims attached or are they separate shims? Has anyone ever replace the buckets with the engine in the car or would you know if this is even possible? Cheers Rich |

Cheers for the advice,looks like i will be investing in a hoist and engine stand. Got a mate whose a mechanic,he knows feck all about these cars really(he is good tho) He said he would just take one head off and sort it that way lol :nono: |

Difficult but I did it on mine. How ever removing the cam etc was a nightmare and resulted in the engine having to be pulled! |

sti v3 has underbucket shims if that helps, good decision on removing the engine will make life so much easier for you

Been looking at a few YouTube vids and one had the shims loose/separate to to bucket and one had a fixed shim in the bucket,both were American vids tho so still not 100% sure if my underbucket shims are fixed or separate? Don't suppose it matters too much,just need to fix the problem and will know more when we pull the engine out. |

Because of the lack of room, the bottom cap bolt wasn't possible to get enough force on to undo it and it just mashed the head. I should have just pulled the engine out to begin with. |

If i find it il pass it on. You'll need a feeler gauge The U.S. Vid was 0.015 for inlet I think and can't remember the exhaust(bigger gap tho) but they work in inches lol I will make sure I have all the correct info to hand before I tackle the job. |

As Banny said, STi Ver3~4 have underbucket shims and the valve clearances are as per the link he put up.
You can reshim in situ but is a right mare to do, so always easier with engine out - just be careful you don't drop any of the shims into the bottom of the heads and into the sump when you remove the buckets ! I have good stock of shims if you need any. Mick |
Excellent,cheers Mick,I was about to drop you a pm about the clearance,I've taken note of your previous thread and will be in touch should I need any shims,hopefully it's nothing more serious.
Guessing it would be wise to check the other head while engines out,so will get some gaskets ordered. |
The exhaust clearances do get smalller in use due to valve seat pitting/micro welding so always wise to check all valve clearances.
