Swapped my Range Rover tonight for a wrx 2004 model please help

Hi all not used this site for a long time thought it was time to go down the Subaru route again as I miss my old 1 managed to find what I thought was a good deal 2004 wrx no proof but owner said it had a rebuild he's lost all paper work as his girlfriend found him cheating and scratched the hell out of the bonnet on the car long story short I made it 20 miles before I heard the passenger rear head tapping to point car stalled when I put clutch in it does start but knocks bad anyone seen or know the car and any help as to what could have gone? It's come at a bad time ( after Christmas plus I had my child in car which he knew so not happen about breaking down at side of the motorway any help appreciated

gutted to hear this

you could do saying the reg number if you want to know if anyone knows the car :thumb:

have you contacted the last owner?

If he said it was a good runner and it broke down within 20 miles, obviously it's not!

I don't know the legalities of 'swaps' but surely it's deception, or could you go to the small claims court for the cost of repairs?

CutMasterT 26 January 2016 10:24 PM

Sounds like the bottom end has gone - which would require a full engine rebuild.

Sorry to hear of the problems, although no paperwork for anything would have set a few alarms bells off.
Get it recovered and off to a specialist for a proper diagnosis.

craig1990cc 26 January 2016 10:30 PM

I'm gutted to be honest not the fact he's ripped me off its knowing I had my 2 year old in car when the engine decided to start knocking it seems to be the passenger inner piston side that's making the noise. I was looking forward to a quick spray to bonnet and a good service and back out on the Subaru scene but looks like it's going to be a good few months before I can afford to get the engine sorted :-(

craig1990cc 26 January 2016 10:33 PM

Car was from Chorley will put reg on tomorrow as don't have car with me its sat outside local garage til tomorrow see what damage in looking at cheers for quick replys will keep updated had big plans for this car and it's kinda thrown me about as I swapped a perfectly working car for this feel stupid myself as gut feeling was to walk away from the car to start with he was too shifty for my liking

CutMasterT 26 January 2016 10:40 PM

Yer sounds like he wanted shot of it as he knew there was problems.

I feel your pain mate, but as you say if something doesn't feel right, then always best to walk away.

craig1990cc 26 January 2016 10:45 PM

I said to Mrs gut feeling was something wasn't adding up car had been parked up a while the boost pipe wasn't fitted right there was a sensor plug not connected pretty gutted but suppose it will make
It all the more special once I've put my personal touch to it and get it out for the summer apparently I've had a few inboxes and he's been trying to palm it off on people so sounds a dodgy person I just feel like driving bk threw and slapping him round street to try knock some sense into the thick t**t ha

CutMasterT 26 January 2016 10:47 PM

Have you done a full check on the car? Just make sure its not stolen and make sure VIN numbers all ok etc?

craig1990cc 26 January 2016 10:50 PM

If I'm honest mate I haven't cars at a garage as I had to get aa man to drop it there so will know more tomorrow need to check it over thing is he don't realise there's a lot more cars on his drive that's worth more car full of lads late at night kicking door in night do job to wake the parafin lamp up

craig1990cc 26 January 2016 10:56 PM

Prob best to drop a full engine in from a breaker

CutMasterT 26 January 2016 11:10 PM

Sounds like a nightmare, defo get all the checks done on it first thing tomorrow.

Probably best to wait for a proper mechanical diagnosis first and then deicide the best way to deal with it. There is a possibility of pure bad luck/timing that the engine failed shortly after you drove off and he could well of not known anything - so going round there and setting his cars on fire probably isn't the best thing to do tbh.
Plus if he has your address etc then you could well be inviting a backlash on your doorstep.

As for rebuild cost it all really depends on what you want out of it, what builder you use and how much you want to spend. Average forged build is best part of 5k and beyond depending on the spec.
Not sure how much a standard spec build would be tho as most tend to uprate when they are going to the trouble of a rebuild. Best to ring around get some quotes together.

I'm not familiar with that area but I'm sure someone on here will be able to advise better.

just me 26 January 2016 11:43 PM

I once had a coil pack plug drop off, cel was flashing, engine sounded weired, was gutted till I noticed the plug had fallen off. Hopefully you might have the same problem but it is a long shot.

ossett2k2 26 January 2016 11:49 PM

Gutted for you mate, like just me says could be something else other than bottom end,I've known spark plugs to come loose and can sound awful if it does.
Keep my fingers crossed for ye :thumb:

Richard Henry's in Bradford,West Yorkshire have an outstanding reputation for all things Subaru and specialize in rebuilds,a good few lads on here swear buy these guys.

craig1990cc 27 January 2016 12:00 AM

Subaru

I'm hoping to god it's nothing major as money's tight at the minute but I've got the Subaru big back so can see me sacrificing a lot to get this thing back to its formal glory if I'm honest it sounded like it was the inner passenger side cylinder that was making the Boise the other side sounds fine not sure which plug it is but the 1 closest to windscreen was making the tapping noise it didn't do it in tick over just when it was revved up I also notice the pipe to the turbo wasn't clipped on right so that needs looking at but that's least of my worries I wouldn't mind but I didn't even give it boost with having my child in car so it's not like it's caused by speeding ext

craig1990cc 27 January 2016 12:09 AM

Forgot to mention I have a code reader and it said it had a misfire on cylinder 4 but the tapping got louder after this so could this e anything to do with the loud knocking tapping noise? Thanks Craig

south_scoob 27 January 2016 12:42 AM

Tinted headlights and replica wheels would have set alarm bells ringing to me! Two nono mods

Hope its nothing serious though mate

If you opt for a rebuild you'll have security in the engine as you implement your modifications. Also, Andy Williams from Williams Motor Sport specialises in subaru engine building, and as a 'one man band' offers very competitive rates. He's worth a call.

Good luck with it mate, I feel for you

ditchmyster 27 January 2016 06:58 AM

I'd go back to the blokes house with the Subaru keys and the address of where the car is and collect your Range Rover and give the lad the keys if I were you, and he'd better just be happy that he didn't get a bat in his face first. :thumb:

Absolutely

JDM_Stig 27 January 2016 08:38 AM

Was the noise at 2700 rpm to about 3500 rpm ? If so new engine required,
How do you swap a car with a total stranger and NOT hpi check it ?
As said very iffy having no paperwork for a 3k rebuild, if you didn't ask who rebuilt it and ring them and check, you only have yourself to blame

craig1990cc 27 January 2016 04:52 PM

Hi just to confirm had the bad news it's a new engine or rebuild for me :-( gutted isn't the word I'm crap at saving money so looks like I'm going to after start saving ha as anyone got a engine for a wrx I've got everything ie turbo ect just need complete engine

ossett2k2 27 January 2016 05:01 PM

Gutted for you pal,the seller a bloody scam artist!!!
Give Matty a call,he advertises in breakers section,he always has plenty of parts for sale.

ditchmyster 27 January 2016 05:02 PM

Seriously pal are you for real, the lad has scammed you, or is there something else you're not telling us??????

I'm not trying to make out like I'm some bad ass, but there is a point at which we all snap, he'd be pissing blood and sh1tting teeth, if he didn't give me my car back and take his keys, by hook or by crook, and I wouldn't be knocking on his door going excuse me mate but!!!

Would you really want to start trouble with someone like that who has your address? Not worth it IMO.
Tough lesson to be learned but I don't think going round there with a baseball bat is going to help, and will just invite trouble back at you.

ossett2k2 27 January 2016 05:09 PM

Ditchy Has a point,if you want your Range Rover back then go get it,this guy obviously knew what he was doing when ripping you off,not to mention putting you and your child at risk!

It's attitudes like yours that let people like this get away with this sort of thing and they know it. They mug off hundreds of people before they meet someone with balls.

Like all bullies and scam artists etc mate, if your going to go for it just make sure you give them a good enough beating so they don't want anymore, then they'll go and find someone else to pick on, they're not as bad as they would have you believe. ;)

craig1990cc 27 January 2016 05:14 PM

There's nothing to tell me he's had my pants down with the car but thing I have in mind for him is for him to think it's all forgot then go knock on. The door with a car full am no push over I'm just good at waiting for right moment to wreck every car he owns and as for him having my address he wouldn't get to door without a 12 bore in his face
