from scratch type r, sprint car build! Advice needed.
Hi,
I've recently bought a Completely bare type r rolling shell with a full sw weld in cage ready to be built up when the time and funds allow! I will be looking to use the car for sprinting, and would also like to keep the car mot-able just in case I want to run in the road going classes This project will have to be kept within a sensible budget but I also realise that it isn't going to be a cheap exercise, I am relatively competent Diy-er having built my current car including a engine refresh, gearbox and clutch change etc etc! So will be able to help keep the costs down on some of the build! The car will be a long term keeper and not something I will be parting with in a hurry so I want quality and reliability to be a important part of the build. I'm going to run my current (old type ra) for the 2016 sprint season but would like to lay plans for this build in the background So I can hit the ground running when I start the build. If someone could advise me on the best way to upload pictures I'd appreciate it also! So chaps let's start with basic specs and what u would go for in my situation. I'll start with a few ideas. ENGINE. (500-550bhp) :norty: Cdb 2.1 stroker K1 rods Wiseco Pistons Heads?? Which are the best standard ones for this power? TURBO. S206 or is the rotated billet gt30 set up worth the extra cost? If I were to go rotated billet gt30 would a 0.63 or 0.83 exhaust housing be more suitable for a sprint/track environment. EXHAUST SYSTEM. 3" system (make?) Headers/up pipe?? ECU. Simtek? SUSPENSION. kW club sport coilovers. GEARBOX. Full six speed set up DCCD? Which 6 speed is strongest and most suitable for sprinting? (Ie ratio's) CLUTCH. Exedy twin plate Brakes. front&rear Ap's. Alcons? Ksport? SHELL. Is it worth fully seam welding? Abw wide arch Full sw weld in cage Lexan windows Tubbed front arches WHEELS 18x 9.75" Hopefully my suggestions will give u a rough idea of my type of budget, trying to aim for good quality items that will do the job but not break the bank!!! :-) I know this is only scratching the surface but what do u think? Chuck me yours ideas suggestions and experiences please. :thumb: Tim. |
Any advice on this build chaps? A lot of parts to cover and just want to get some views and experiences of doing similar or using similar mods and parts.
Thanks Tim. |
22b Is your place to be mate, you will get good accurate information over there.
22b and scoobynet are like chalk and cheese! |
Take your budget, and double it and you will be somewhere close to where you need to be.
You will spend as much in small "insignificant" items as the large items, hoses, clips, bolts, fuel rails etc, although not large expenses will add up to rougghly the same cost as the main parts. |

I was placing at budget of around 15-20k and a timescale of around 3 years to get it right. Like u say though it's the little things that will add up. :freak3: |
For a decent spec 2.1 you are going to be looking at the thick end of 10k in the engine, a little bit will be saved by fitting yourself etc, but you will then struggle with any come back if there is an issue....
Suspensionn brakes etc is easily another 5k. Swirl pots, fuel pumps, fittings etc will be needed if using it on track etc, another 1k to do it properly, 500quid if you are going to use cheap hose and fittings etc. 6speed set up 2k Standalone ecu 1.2k Turbo, manifolds, exhaust etc what 1.5k? |
Clutch to take over 500hp is 1k....
|
I will definitely have to do a lot of the work myself, and source most bits 2nd hand to come in within budget but hoping it can be done. I certainly won't be spending money unless it's 100% necessary. The rolling shell does have some good suspension parts already on, full body kit, quick rack etc etc so I'm off to a pretty good start. ;-)

For the rough spec you put up of yours plans is ok.
2.1 Heads for spool I'd use avcs (jdm big port if you can find) RCM headers, Harvey uppipe (again good spool is what you want for sprints) Box, 6 speed for deffo, jdm box all short ratios, but 6 speed are short compared to 5 speeds anyway, UK 6 speed will be same ratios as jdm 1-4, just 5-6 is longer, hawk box is the longest from 2-6. Exhaust, a proper full 3" make is irrelevant as long as it's decent flow either custom or branded. Turbo is your choice for engine etc but both are capable. Ecu I'd go with syvecs. Clutch, yes twin is ok. Brakes, AP out of the 3 you mentioned. I see your going for 18" wheels and wide. Personally I wouldn't, if your going widearch the get some wide 17s instead and lightest you can find. And yes, the price will easily rocket when your fussy and want the right stuff first time round, I was supposed to be doing a cheap build but it's gone boom with at least £6k just in engine and box and that's on a stock sti8 block, so easily add a few more k on if I went with a built block. Btw that's that she'll you bought off Ryan yes? |

Pretty good base to work from really, going to run my current car for nxt season's sprinting then sell it and concentrate on this project I think. :wonder: Do u know much about the shell? Or the history of it? Think it was banny's old car at sumpoint. Tim. |

My advice is wait until next year, use your RA come along to the events and see what it's all about. Too many people start these major projects with the best of intentions and don't finish them. Come to an event see what's what, you may be surprised

Ps that car/shell Is not compliant with any road classes.
|
I have run in this year's liverpool and chesters sprint championship in class c3 and came 2nd overall so have so have gained some invaluable experience in that time.
I would probably run in the same class with the type r or maybe look at the 22b series but would still like to keep the car in a road legal ish state in case I felt the need to mot it. :cuckoo::thumb: Tim. |

A fully welded in cage and wide arches is s3 in 22b sprints
