2.5 engine failure

Hi guys looking for some advise on what to do next. My car is currently with api and after 12 weeks of it being there ive finally got a quote for the work that needs doing, cutting a long story short, it a 2.5 wrx hawk, dredded Ringland failure and crack, also needs replacement block and been quoted £6300!! I'm sure it's worth doing but to be frank ive only got 4k set aside. I paid 3900 for the wrx with 90k on the clock which with limited knowledge at the time wasn't aware of the unreliable 2.5 engine. I'm really not sure which way to go weather to try and see what can be sorted with api or get a second hand lump and put in? Locally ive seen a spec d lump from a hawk for 2k (not sure of milage) so not sure if this is an option or will a 2l sti lump go in? Sorry for multiple questions but my knowledge is slowly building of impreza's but having only owned my first one for a few months to have this issue is a bit of a kick in the balls lol!!

If the block is scrap it's not gonna be a cheap build mate so about the right sort of figure :( (just had my type r 2.5'd so know the costs)

you had some prices for other options?

fat-thomas 08 October 2015 07:29 PM

Second hand engine.
6 k on a wrx is madness.
I'd go for a 2.0 sti engine if it's going to be second hand
The spec d had the same poo.5 as the wrx

What you first need to think of is, what will the car be used for, what power goal to do have in mind then budget. then work with that

jayallen 08 October 2015 09:09 PM

£6300? Are they taking the piss?

InTurbo 08 October 2015 09:15 PM

Spend the 4K on a new car then try and recoup some money from your broken wrx,
I couldn't spend over 6k on a car that worth nearly half that...

why? will be new block, rods, pistons, heads will need rebuilding etc etc etc

when most of the engine is junk it soon adds up

I would Drop a 2nd hand 2.0 sti engine in it, I'm sure mattyb has one for sale

mudsplat2000 08 October 2015 09:41 PM

It's something to do with a 2.0l oil sump has been fitted which has stuffed the crank and damaged the block. But yeah I don't agree with spending that money on a wrx lol!! Was tempted with a 2.0 sti lump but wasn't too sure if it will fit the 5 speed box and other parts as it's a 2.5 coming out (sorry for lack of knowledge) lol

ScottyPPP 08 October 2015 10:33 PM

2.0 lump will bolt up to your gearbox fine.

mudsplat2000 08 October 2015 10:43 PM

Think I'll be having a word with api and see what they suggest as the engine is in bits weather they can source a 2l sti lump

Sarg400 08 October 2015 11:29 PM

There a couple engines for sale in the breakers section mate

G10 08 October 2015 11:29 PM

I'd speak to these guys...

Good luck

As above I'd go for a 2.0L STI engine, £6k on a wrx is most definitely madness, speak to mattyb in the breakers section, sure he'll have a couple of engines to chose from, also ask him what else you'll need as I think you may need an ECU avcs loom (if you want that to work) and possibly an STI inlet manifold, as above gearbox is no problem.

mudsplat2000 09 October 2015 07:29 AM

I've pmd mattyb in regards to sti lump and anything else needed, I assume these are a much stronger engine than most of the impreza range and I'm not going to be wasting my time?

I think the blocks have same serial number, but the compression ratios are different.
Would putting a different type engine in have a big impact on the cost of insurance?

6k+ seems a bit steep :(

Don't know what Japspeeds rep is like but have a look here :thumb:

You'll need to factor in head gaskets, bolts, seals, oils etc etc and labour probably going to be well north of £5.5k. If the quote is for a none forged repair the above maybe an option??

+ heads + fitting.

6k for a forge 2.5 with block etc supplied isn't bad.

To be honest, and I don't think the OP wants to hear this but he really wants to think like an insurance company, the repairs are almost double the cars worth 'it's a write off' time to cut losses and look for something else :(

Tidgy 09 October 2015 10:14 AM

to be fair you could argue that for most engine rebuilds, depends on if you want to keep the car or not.

ScottyPPP 09 October 2015 10:18 AM

Also depends on if you can do a lot of the work yourself. With mine I bought a brand new WMS built 2.1 bare short block, then did the rest myself. Still came in just over 3K though.

Yeah, if you're not confident in your own ability leave it to someone who knows what they're doing!
