HELP! Lights not working...
 

Firstly, sorry if this isn't in the right part of the forum, but I'ts a bit of a serious issue and I needed it to be seen in the busiest part.

Car is a Turbo 2000.

Basically, my headlights work but my sidelights and more importantly, taillights don't. I switched the bulbs over with my other Turbo 2000 which worked fine on the old car but when installed on this car, they don't. So I'm probably right in guessing it's an electrical issue rather than a bulb issue. The biggest problem is I work nights and therefore, can't really drive around with no rear lights on.
I've already accepted that I'll have to taxi it to work and back tonight (which will cost me around £30) but it's something that needs sorting asap.

Anyone in the Thurrock area tomorrow or can anyone on here offer advice as to what it could be?

Checked fuses?

Fuses are an obvious one. But for both to go? Unusual.

Also, there are different fuses for each side headlights and for the rear lights., so doubly unusual.

What about the light switch?

We are assuming you have the ignition on/engine running? Without it, no lights.

Headlights work so can't be switch can it?

If the key isn't on, then no lights obviously. When the ignition is on you turn the lights stalk to sidelights and nothing comes on, turn again to main headlights and only the main one's come on. Tried rear fog light switch, nothing for that either. Brake lights still work though, as does reverse and indicators...

Could still be switch for sidelights, they feed separately from the headlights.

Do you get both lots of headlights, dip and main beam?

Have you checked if there is a fuse for sides and fogs?

If it's there, remove and check using a multimeter etc, do NOT rely on a visual check.

Check fuse if good check there is power going to the fuse if no power getting to the fuse then go for the relay switch I think it's behind the fuse box under the dash you can swap relay for another that is the same heated rear relay is the same I think good luck

Right fuses are fine so gonna replace the two headlight relay fuses at the top of the fuse box. I assume these are the ones your talking about? Where the best place to get them, Halfords don't

Are they a standard 4-pin?

Take one out and go to a decent carshop, or motor factor?

seems to be odd that it is not the fuses as that is exactly what happened on my wife's classic. side lights and rear lights not working as they are linked. turns out it was two fuses gone, one in the fuse board on drivers side and one in the fuse box in the engine bay.

i thought your headlights worked perfect replacing headlight relay will do nothing check the fuses inside the car as swisstony said

Think the one in the engine is marked lighting SW

Might sound like a silly question, but do they come on if you press the switch on the top of the steering wheel cowling - for the parking lights? This might help narrow down fuse/switch related issues...

Ran out of time and light again today, sadly when you work nights, at some point you need sleep. I've bought a tool to check all the fuses again for peace of mind (not sure if it's a multi-meter but it'll show me if the fuse has power in it or not) and then I'll try the parking light on top of the steering wheel. I'll post some pictures up tomorrow of the fuse box in the engine bay so I know EXACTLY which one's I need to be checking for. I'm not mechanically minded as you can probably guess...

And where is the fuse board on the drivers side? Somewhere down by the pedals?

Yes the interior fusebox is a smaller box to the right hand side of the loud pedal,you'll have to get on your knees and stick your head in there.

Ok so here is my fusebox in the bonnet with the diagram of what is what:

And I found this to the right of the accelerator pedal, slightly hidden behind the plastic trim:

There's others like it but they're more hidden away behind the bonnet release if that makes sense.

Anyway, I've gotta go to bed for a few hours so will crack on with this later. Any ideas as to which fuses, switches, relays I need to check would be helpful. Thanks guys...

Also, tried the parking brake light ontop of the steering cowling and THAT WORKS!

Isn't there a fuse box behind the coin holder to the r/h side of the steering wheel?

If it's a classic, there is...but he's kept telling us he's checked the fuses???

The fuses under the dashboard are much easier to get at if you remove the bit of lower dash. There are only 3 scews and a couple of clips that hold it on. Then the fusebox can be seen, behind the bonet release handle.

Also, and I know it's a bodge, but if the parking light switch works, can you use that, combined with the headlight switch so you can drive it at night (temporarily) until you resolve it properly - assuming that the headlight and parking light combination still works with the ignition on? Would save you on taxi fares!

It's sounding to me like it might be the actual headlight switch at fault, if the parking light switch makes them come in. I wouldn't think they'd be separately fused.

Right, so went back out this evening to have a go at the fuses again and everything else and lo and behold, all the lights started to work! So I've replaced the SW fuse for peace of mind and will see how it goes. Strange how it started to work again, so could be an intermittent problem...

Maybe one or more of the fuses weren't seated right and you testing and replacing has sorted it.

Haha yeah I hope so too. Well, I replaced all fuses in connection to the lights so maybe one was loose or indeed on it's way out. Will keep checking everytime I go out just incase.
