how old is too old for a STI
Hello all,
Im 33yrs old living in Tucson and have always love the STI model. I especially fell in love with the STI brand when the 2005 body change came. Now some 10yrs later I'm in a good place where i can finally own one. So my question, is it a good idea to buy a 05 STI? What are the chances of finding one clean with no mods? Or should i go with a later model used of course. I never buy brand new cars or trucks. What do you guys think search for a 05 are get something a little newer? |
It's a great idea. There are still quite a few around that are being well maintained and not over-used, so go for it.

Tucson, Arizona?
Some nice desert roads where you can exploit the car definitely..I found Imprezas hard to find in the States though, more Evo's about |
Its hot out there so you should have a nice choice of rust free models out there.
|
Thanks guys so try to find a clean 05 06 wouldn't be a bad idea:thumb: another question should i worry about the piston rings? I think the term is "ringland" because most of the 05-07 STI's will have high miles and I don't want to rebuild the engine just yet. The wife and I just sold our 2012 GTI because we needed more room for the kid. Now Im getting the itch to go fast again, and after driving a friends evo 8 with 300+hp I was like yea its time for some action lol!!!

Think he means 'how old is too old for the car (in this case 10 years)' not 'is he too old' :lol1:

Lol so what about the piston ring failure rumors?
|
Other than odd ball, 2.5's are the problem ones
|
Did all US 2004-2005 STI's have the dodgy 2.5 engine?
|
All 2.5's I believe. Don't think they change the pistons?

Well I'm 49 and I have a 97 V3 STI Type R and my Daily driver is an 04 WRX Wagon PPP with some light mods, I still feel pretty much the same as I did when I was maybe 25yrs old. But to be honest out in the states I'd be more inclined to get something with big block chevy engine and gun it on the million miles of straights you have out there.

My dads 66 and got one lol

just buy a low mileage sti for as little as possible but budget for a engine forged rebuild :thumb: the 2.5's are made of chocolate :thumb:

good to know how much of an investment is the forge build? and what is a comfortable low milage vehicle when dealing with this type of cars? Thanks everyone for the help but i was really concern about the age of the car. If there was still any at the stealerships, or would i have to settle for the newer body styles and hatchbacks |
2ltr jdm engine here in mine done 182000miles still going strong, as for the cost of a forged 2.5 in the states have a look at real street performance website price up the parts and then add the labour :thumb:
|
2.0L engines are good for loads of milage if looked after, (regular oil changes) I do mine at roughly every 5/6000 miles with good quality oil (motul 300v) mine has just gone over 120,000 miles, plenty go over 150k so not too worried just yet, I think there's a few miles left in the old girl yet.:thumb:

Just forge the engine at some point if it was me that's what I would do or buy one already done.

So i went and test drove the '15 MR and i sat in the '15 STi didnt test drive because the baby was about to throw a fit so my time was short. As soon as i pushed the button to start the STi i feel in love. The interior was so nice and the dash and digital layouts were very sexy. Felt like i was sitting in jet cockpit. The MR was nice but just basic and i couldnt justify $40K on that car plus mods... So im stuck on the STi, but should i buy the 15-16 yr models or wait for the next big change in 2017? Does anyone have any info? i know the engine suppose to change to a fa20 but what about this hatchback talk? Will they still make sedans and will it still have that Subie rumble?
