drag strip noob

Yesterday was my first ever time on the drag strip, always wanted to do it. Its pretty addictive, I have a bugeye wrx running 267bhp best run was 14.2 with a reaction time of 1.01. Is that poor? I think I could probs get it lower with more practice

Mines the silver, the Scooby in the other lane ran 14.5

slimwiltaz 20 September 2015 10:17 PM

Anybody have any input?

ditchmyster 21 September 2015 06:49 AM

Be patient, I'm sure one of the resident drag queens will be along to comment before too long. :thumb:

scoobiepaul 21 September 2015 07:12 AM

Seems about right, my old bug sti did a 13.7 sec run ( I have only ever done 3 runs on a drag strip). With practice it might be possible to shave 3 or 4 tenths of a second off.

JGlanzaV 21 September 2015 08:22 AM

Reaction was slow, but not the worst.

Although reaction is pretty irrelevant. What were your 60ft times, terminal speeds etc?

slimwiltaz 21 September 2015 09:45 AM

Thanks for the reply's, I noticed everyone else were getting reaction times under 1 second, I stuttered off the line on the first two runs, my launch needs alot of practice, think I didn't have enough revs, my terminal speed was 97mph. Not sure on 60ft.

My reaction times are regularly over 10 secs, its not important, all it means is how quickly you set off after the lights when green, the time doesnt start until you move anyway, so if you are looking for times take your time and get a decent launch, ignore the other guy as it doesnt matter what he is doing!

Your 60ft times are important, Im hitting 1.7s most of the time (under 2s is 1G of acceleration)

More revs and rather than side step the clutch slip the clutch a bit it will stop you from bogging down, also keep blipping the revs before launch as it will spin the turbo up better than just holding revs :)

EDIT like this -

Thank you for that advice, appreciated 👍 I didn't realise untill getting home that I could of picked my time slips up, doh. I just relied on my wife recording it and looking at the time on the overhead. By slipping the clutch do you mean bringing it up slower with more revs?

Thats alright! Any time.

Yes basically, as you bring the clutch up slowly build the revs, the clutch will start to slip a little (revs will climb but speed wont pick up) if you can match the speed of the revs climbing with releasing the clutch it helps load up the engine smoothly rather than trying to launch will all the power :)

However, it is harsh on your clutch, so I wouldnt advise it too much if you are planning on it lasting 50k miles lol!

Ah yeah I understand 👍 looking forward to go again its addictive, I wanna try your advise I believe it will help as I was comming off the clutch real quick with little revs and the car seemed to bunny hop, that must be the bogging down you mentioned?

mickywrx 21 September 2015 06:48 PM

Give it death and dump the clutch. :D :thumb:

JGlanzaV 21 September 2015 07:47 PM

Thats the one Micky!

Just for comparison, 1.9sec 60ft in the pissing down rain, with a gear change ;)

And one where it bogged down, got the rev matching on take off wrong here

mickywrx 21 September 2015 07:59 PM

On all of my best times the 60' has been 1.7s :thumb:

Thats more like it!

1.7s are good times, I have a timing slip somewhere my mate did a 1.2 in my car  I still think its a timing error lol, Ive never managed below a 1.7, but then again I havent taken it to a proper strip....

I've ran at York 3 times with different power levels in my 1300kg Newage WRX

13.74 with 280bhp
13.31 with 295bhp
12.68 with 330bhp

14.2 seems about right for 267bhp. I have to slip the clutch to stop wheel spin, like you would in a fwd car without thinking.

Them look like good times. I'm going to go back next month to try again lol. I have a vf35 going on after Christmas so I need the practice

slimwiltaz 22 September 2015 04:31 PM

Also guys, I borrowed my mates crosser helmet so need one of my own, would a motorcycle crash helmet be ok if I get one from a motorcycle shop?

mickywrx 22 September 2015 08:07 PM

That's all I used, proper bike lid.

Nee bother. :thumb:

RS Matt, has spunked god knows how much money chasing a 1/4 mile time that I set in 2008 when I was having a laugh with my mates. :lol1:

The Type R in the video I posted was my friends.

I beat SteveBT on the same day.

Good times for 330 bhp, what have you done to get te weight down to 1300???
I wonder what my full weight wrx will do now with 353bhp, my 60fts were around 1.8 before

Scoobyman neil 23 September 2015 02:14 AM

I was there on Saturday too :) I was in the grey classic with black boot lid. Best thing you want to be doing to get your times down is lose weight out the car and take the spoiler off, also drop tyre pressures for better grip ;)

fat-thomas 23 September 2015 04:55 AM

Just buy the sti...
Dont mess with the poverty spec version

I've put it in my avatar, so now every post I make clears up which is the fastest, lightest, less costliest, most efficient and most economical car.
