Another maths question.

Try this one, then.

A rabbit and a cat together weigh 10 kg
The rabbit and a dog together weigh 20 kg.
The cat and the dog together weigh 24 kg.

What would be the weight of the three together?

(Disclaimer: "weight" ought, really, to read "mass".)

SJ_Skyline 17 September 2015 03:32 PM

27

1. R + C = 10
2. R + D = 20
3. C + D = 24

Re-arrange 1:
C = 10 - R

Solve into 3:
10 - R + D = 24
D - R = 14
D = R+14

Solve into 2:
R + R + 14 = 20
2R = 6
R = 3

Solve back into 1:
3 + C = 10
C = 7

Solve back into 3:
7 + D = 24
D = 17

Total :
17 + 7 + 3 = 27

Easy - cat weighs 4kg more than rabbit.
Cat weighs 7kg
Rabbit weighs 3kg
Dog weighs 17kg
Total is therefore 27kg
Cheers

Er.. add them all together and you have the combined weight of 2 of each = 54kg which means the combined weight of one of each is 27kg

Is this difficult? :confused:

No, just interesting, so far I've seen two ways to do it and neither was the way I did it.

I'm with "Rachel Riley" here on this one that's how I did it!!!!

Extra points to Skyline - my maths teacher beat it in to us to always show your 'workings out' to get full points for the question!

:smug:

In hindsight I would go with F1's answer as that's by far the most simple, but I'll take an extra point when offered. ;)

I think the cat needs to lose some weight.

alcazar 24 September 2015 02:17 PM

LOL, I thought someone might say that.

Tidgy 24 September 2015 02:36 PM

Bloody big cat at 7kg

alcazar 24 September 2015 03:13 PM

It's a virtual cat...it exists only so we can have a question about it.
:D
