Undisclosed modifications

As per title i've been a bit naughty my car is in the body shop for some repairs due to vandalism. Hands up I never bothered to tell my insurance I changed my wheels, fitted coilovers and induction kit etc

Bodyshop called me up said they have to give me the car back and not complete the work ( I'm guessing the told my insurers its modified) called up my insurance Co and they say the underwriters are going to contact me and the claim has been made "pending".

I know it is all my fault I didn't tell them, but my car was only in for body repair as I am a victim of a crime can anybody kind of give me some advice as to what they think will happen?

Thanks
Tom

cancelled insurance (so you wont get the rapair done) and you will be reported to the police for no insurance.

At a guess, will mean insurance doesnt have to pay out so saves them money.

Unless your very lucky and they accept what you say

madscoob 17 September 2015 03:51 PM

tell them you bought it like it, if it's a jap import even better just say it must of come over from japan like it :thumb: all those mods make no difference to the vandalism, even if you had a crash they would have to prove the mods made it significantly faster, therefore rendering your insurance nil and void, and the best laugh is that most aftermarket parts are cheeper than oe in the event of a claim

JGlanzaV 17 September 2015 06:38 PM

What madscoob? That is no excuse, your insurance is invalid and youre up a creek with out the proverbial paddle...

madscoob 17 September 2015 06:47 PM

i know he's firked but it's worth a try, if the wheels are made by subaru just different it won't make any difference, coilovers ? still shocks in my book, i bet they are rimming him for the induction kit

Nope, its if it differs from standard specification, so even adding alloy wheels say off a vectra vxr to an SRI need to be declared....

They shaft you either way!

the shreksta 17 September 2015 07:47 PM

If there is a way an insurance company could get out of paying then they will find it...........

InTurbo 17 September 2015 07:56 PM

My last hawk was written off by insurers. They inspected the car and I was worried as I had a few undeclared modifications and they didn't say anything and sent me a chequer within days.

Car was insured with elephant.

Yep, let's blame the insurers just because the OP has been caught out

Moley 17 September 2015 09:54 PM

To the OP - it depends on your insurers.

Some might say they'd have charged £x for the mods being on the car, and get you to pay that additional premium before they authorise to repairs.

Other insurers may void your policy, so you'd be a bit screwed.

All you can do is keep your fingers crossed, hope for the best, and learn from it.

My ex had trouble due to she had painted calipers on her punto sporting

Reshard1977 17 September 2015 11:16 PM

Insurance are robbers. They rob from us, and each other, then put the cost of insurance up because of all the work involved with robbing from us and each other.

Talking out of experience, not about the OP's case.

I agree with the above, you could even call the insurers and offer to pay the excess premium for the mods?

Either way it's a lesson learnt but at least you'll know for the future :thumb:

The trouble with that is you are trying to insure retrospectively.

Some mainstream insurers might get funny, but my own experience with the insurers we deal with is fine.

They don't always get it right straight away, but that's why us brokers are here to help if there are any issues.

The only claims i've ever seen thrown out are for genuine reasons.
It's very easy to blame the insurers... but sometimes you have to look further and see why there are issues.
Like in this case, where the OP has failed to disclose his mods.

who told ya insurance about the mods???? if it was the paintshop, go and see them and tell em to say they made a mistake, surly they want the work or maybe not. if the insurance company sent there own mr man out then tell paintshop to say they had just fitted the parts as it was getting painted, you just havent had time to phone insurance. just tell em it was standered at time of accident parts have been fitted since. job done.

This may work if the insurance companies were stupid..... but they aren't.

Which is precisely why I am with Gary and on a modified policy.

I dont think I have declared any major mods recently but then I am sure Gary has noted them from my facebook profile anyway :lol1::lol1:

Edmondo 18 September 2015 04:19 PM

Gary - Got some mods lying around here at home to go on the car - be a dear and nip down and do them for me and that'll save me a phone call:lol1::lol1::lol1::lol1:

Yeah this kind of what i was expecting, I'm more than happy to pay an additional premium I'd just rather not have to lose my policy to be honest.

Oh and I've no issue with the vandalism it is going to court and he's screwed, it was all on CCTV.

Thank for your advice, I may soon be after a quote lol
