legality of sidelights

Ok so i purchased amber crystal side lights and when i
Was in at a friends garage the MOT tester informed me that
My amber sidelights were illegal and i will get stopped from the
Traffic police and probably charged as they should be white light.
If this is the case then ive wasted near 30 quid.
Anyone able to inform otherwise??

White lights only, I'm afraid, the only amber is flashing amber for indicators.

Just had to take the amber sidelights off my new classic, was also told they were not legal in this country.
Don't see why tho as trucks have orange lights down the side of them.
Maybe they could be mistaken for indicator/hazards?
Anyway I've gone back to clear ones now.

Down the side is different.

The UK lighting regs say that only steady white lights may be shown at the front of a vehicle, with steady red at the rear.
The exceptions are flashing orange indicators, and white reversing lights only when the vehicle is in reverse gear.

Blue lights are reserved for emergency services only.

And yes, there are a good few trucks out there in breach of the regs......but then, the FRENCH police check vehicles entering France for headlight adjusters for driving on the right...our lot never check foreign trucks etc...too easy to sit behind a camera and take pics, then send a demand for money.

The yellow lights down the sides of trucks are 'marker lights' NOT side lights and are legal.

Presumably then all the cars I see with the neon-like blue sidelights are illegal and will not pass an MOT ? Seems to be a hell of a lot them about ...

alcazar 16 September 2015 04:16 PM

Illegal, yes.
Will not pass an MoT? What, with MoT stations that pass cars without cats etc?

MoT is mostly a scam anyway. It was supposed to be going to be every TWO years like the rest of Europe, but the garages making an easy £45 out of 20 minute's work, complained, got the road safety groups onside, scare-mongered about unsafe cars and lo...it was cancelled. We got the stiffer MoT like Europe has, but every year:mad:

Front (head/side/fog/driving) lights can be either white or yellow, but unfortunately Amber is not legal.
