Chunks on the 6-speed magnet
 

Hi all

So I've purchased a 6-speed setup for my classic reasonably recently. It's taken me a while to get here but today I was preparing to put some nice fresh oil in it but before that decided to drop the sump - to clean it up and just in case, just for the peace of mind. Well, instead of the peace of mind I've found chunks of metal on the magnet. They seem to be teeth, but on the other hand they seem a bit too thin to be the gear teeth. Or do they?

Can any of you with experience form and express some sort of opinion based on the photos? I will be taking it apart as the next step but ... well, thought I'd ask here to know what to prepare myself for.

The seller's going for "it was working fine" line but I'm still hoping to get somewhere with him. I just love my "one step forward five steps back" project.

Never stripped a gearbox but how hard can it be? :D

Thoughts on the origin of the metal pieces, though?

A bit of an update

Today seemed like a good day to do my first transmission strip-down. We still have the front diff to get to and inspect but I believe the main culprit has been found - the centre diff. Took it out and immediately there was a broken-off tooth under it. Looked at the diff then and there are quite a few missing and damaged teeth. The photo doesn't show the extent of the damage but yeah ...

The gears actually looked just fine. One of the synchros is showing a bit more wear than the others but nothing unexpected there. So next step is to get to the front diff to see what condition that is in.

I thought the 6-speeds were bulletproof :)

I found out that six speed are not bullet proof! They are prone to worn synchros, the worn synchros then lead to gear failure. In my case my used 6 speed required all the synchros and sixth gear replaced a few months after purchase. I was fortunate enough to be dealing with a reputable breaker who was reasonable when dealing with the issue.

Yep, 6spds are not invincible, dont be fooled into thinking it will handle the massive power you are hoping for lol.

Im on my 2nd 6spd now, broke the first TY856WN4CA, synchros died on 3-6th and lots of missing teeth and very "glittery" oil when stripped....

My TY856WN2CA I have fitted now also doesnt have very good synchros and will be getting rebuilt this winter

Makes sense :) But stripping teeth on the centre diff? Can't say I've read any discussion anywhere about that.

Anyway, the front diff looks fine so just the centre one and the oil pump drive gear that I've seen so far that will need to be replaced.

Based on what I've read it seems like a good idea to replace all the synchros "while I'm in there".

As said.... All be warned ....a 6 speed upgrade will prob cost you a box rebuild as well as the original gearbox... synchros are s**t mainly caused by worn plastic pads on selector forks.. ( yeah I'm not joking.. "plastic pads")..

Yup. I took the disassembled gearbox to the dealership for a speacial-tool-assisted look and the first thing the mechanic said that he'll look at the shifter forks as those are a well known issue. Haven't heard back from them yet, though.

Well it could have been worse.

The dealership mechanic showed me the internals and apart from the centre diff and the drive gear for the oil pump also the bearings in the extension case and one of the shift forks (3-4) will need to be replaced. On Monday I'll know the costs and the lead times.

Price? Lol

Still not finalized but I'll keep you posted as much as I can.

I had a quote from the dealership for parts that was basically £900 GBP including the VAT so I decided to give an UAE seller (partsouq.com) a try. They didn't quite have everything I needed and I believe I bought one of the last oil pump drive gears in Europe from a UK seller but all in all I am well under 600GBP in terms of parts. That includes both shipping and the VAT. The parts arrived from the UAE in three days and everything seems genuine and in order, just the packaging itself could be better, so I'm happy I gave them a try.

Now I'm waiting for that last gear and then I will know how much it's going to cost me in terms of labour.
