Using phone as car satnav
Can anyone point us to web page on the law here.
Presumably it must be legal if apps are made for purpose , sygic in this instance TIA |
The general rule of thumb for anything running on a phone when driving is that it must not need physical interaction from the driver. If it's held in a mount, and either needs no instructions once you're on the move or will respond to voice commands, you're in the clear.

I think google maps navigation is fantastic, superior in many way to Garmin, offering alternate routes and time saved as well as more accurate traffic data.
Google Now work very well, so you don't even need to touch screen more than once. Using a 9 inch high res tablet tethered to phone you have top end info-Nav device at a fraction of the cost of built in systems. |
I use copilot live - I like the fact that I don't need data for it to work. Traffic redirects work well,
|
The app I got has maps downloaded .
No way would I want to be using an internet connection abroad ! |
I used Apple maps on O2 in France last week, in fact I used as much internet as I could and it was £2 a day. But, I carry a TomTom because not everywhere has data when you need it.

You can get a gps signal most places though ...:Suspicious

I paid to use my allowance in France also , but I didn't need/want to use it for sat nav
|
I've been using a bog-standard TomTom for past 4 years, never steered me wrong.
Modern technology eh... |
Tom tom is 85quid , an app is 25 ( for the world maps)

You can download the maps to your mobile. Pretty sure you can get Google Maps to download the entire route and it has a night mode, which it needs as it's desperately ugly.
Yes you can http://bgr.com/2014/05/08/how-to-sav...-maps-offline/ |
Quite happy thank you , For a
Fraction of the price ! Iv absolutely no interest at all in being delivered to the nearest Maccydeez. ( POI) |

But you need to then rely on 3G/4G phone/data signal plus it can cost more using the data. A Tom Tom/garmin is basically a one off cost and you don't have to worry about whether you will get signal or not:
|
Useless for iPad of course , cos iPad has weak gps
|
I think the clear message coming across here is to stay well clear of Apple products.
|
Well yes ,
But moving on , I guess if you've put your phone to airplane mode whilst using nav app there's really no come back |
doesn't airplane mode disable gps too rendering it unusable for navigation.
|
Gps is from satellites , airplane mode shuts down Wi-Fi and 3g/4g
|
At least on my 40 quid Alcatel .
Dont know about your posh iPhone etc |
The iPad is used by untold numbers of pilots for navigation, it's perfect for the job. Airplane mode does shut down GPS, but you an turn off wifi, Bluetooth and Cellular yourself if it takes your fancy.
|
What ??
"Untold" is the key word here |

I was to say to TJT that he/she should "tell me about it!" and here you are, dpb. Your protest against Apple never ceases. :lol1:
...doubtless something to do with flogging apple maps |
Just buy a car that has it standard. Simples

You've got to poke around turning off individual components to be free from charge, shabby really for an 800 quid phone
