relay for hella horns

hi guys,

just got a nice set of hell supertones from scoobypart.com and was wondering the easiest way to fit them or more to the point to wire them up...I have the relay and the wiring diagram says where they go etc but looks all a bit strange so my question is this...... could you just disconnect the horn already on the car and then wire the 2 hellas in place with the relay between them or do you have to run a supply from the battery etc

any help or advice on a good quick easy way or a good way of just doing it would be good....

I know where to mount them so that's not an issue just wiring them up...

thanks guys

Don't bother with the relay mate not needed wasn't on mine or my mates.

Dubzy 06 August 2015 01:30 AM

Just use and extend the wires from the old horns, you dont need to use the relay as there is already one in the electrical circuit. Its a nice simple job.

nikon-man 06 August 2015 07:26 AM

thanks for the info guys...

so a nice easy job that will look good through the grill as well as sound a lot better

nikon-man 06 August 2015 07:35 AM

I think my hatch only has 1 horn though...

alcazar 06 August 2015 08:52 AM

Personally, I WOULD use the relay.
Two reasons: the stock Scoob wiring is poor, and the new horns pull about four times the current of the old.

Wiring as follows:

Relay terminal 85: from old horn.
86: to a suitable earth.
87: to new horns.
30 FROM battery +ve via a suitable blade fuse.

will the relay already on my hatch be as good as the one that came wit hthe hella horns.....

I was looking and can only find one horn on my car

Don't worry about the bloody relay you don't need it on yours. If you had a doggy old classic then maybe :lol1:

Post a question on the hatches thread about how many horns you should have :thumb:j

Well, yes.......except that modern car wiring uses the thinnest wire it can get away with.

Hella suggest a relay for a reason.

Listen to Alcazar. He knows what hes on about

rb5 stu 08 August 2015 11:56 AM

No need for a relay, ive had my hellas wired direct with the standard connections for years.

Second horn is in front of the RH (offside) wheel behind the liner.

Standard relay is fine.

does anyone have a wiring diagram for the hella fitting on a blobeye?

with and without relay as no one can agree.

Hatch onwards doesn't require a new relay setup as the horns are on a separate circuit with two feeds direct from the relay so the wiring is man enough for the job

Blobeye needs the relay setup as the horn circuit only has a single feed from the relay to the two horns and the fuse supplying it supplies the following circuits as well:-
Cruise control sub switch
Hazard switch
Keyless entry control module
Key warning switch
Security control module

Blobeye OEM

thanks for all of this info ... so if my hatch has relays already installed would I be right in thinking the lead from my current horn goes to one of the connectors on the new hella horns and the other connector goes to ground.... the connectors on the hella horns are labelled 30 & 14.....

Yes, the original horns ground through the mounting bracket, the hella's require an earth lead (which usually for convenience connects to the mounting bolt as earth).
Doesn't matter which horn terminal is which.

my fitting guide is here..

I bought my kit from the USA, subimods.com glad i bought the wiring kit and bracket, so much easier to fit.

so I fitted the new hella horns and wired them up with one feed to each new horn from the horns already on the car and then one from the other connector and grounded them and nothing not a sound is to be heard... changed them over so I used connector 30 on each new hella and 14 to ground nothing and then 30 to ground still not a peep.... in the end I put the hella horns back in the box and reconnected my old horns and hey I have noise...

any ideas or clues as to why the hella horns don't want to work ???

thanks

rb5 stu 15 August 2015 06:15 PM

You need to earth them.

nikon-man 15 August 2015 06:19 PM

they are earthed by the bracket that's connects the new hella horns to the car .... then wired in as I mentioned

Have you tried the horns direct on the battery to confirm they are good??
