Hi
Recently my car has started to smoke from the exhaust when idling, after driving it for about 5 mins it begins to clear up, when i come to a stop it remains clear for a few minutes but then you start getting the bluey smelly smoke coming from it again. I have taken the intercooler off to check for excessive oil but there is only the usual inside the intercooler and the turbo inlet is clean. The oil level is fine, however this has only been going on for a few days so maybe it will drop, and the oil cap is clean. We had the car on one of those gas analyser things and readings were textbook. Does anyone know what might be going on? Car is an MY00 UK turbo, decat exhaust, filter and DV. Ian |
Blue smoke = piston ring :(
I've had this happen to me in my alfa.... |
Sounds like valve seals.. although not had the problem on a Scooby.
Some of the oil in the cam areas leaks through a seal down the edge of the valve and gets burnt.. if it is that then it is doing no harm but obviously you want it sorted. Usually diagnoused by a big cloud of smoke when you first start it as some of the oil has drained into the bores once you switched the engine off. Hope you get it sorted.. |
This appears to be worryingly common at the moment, and no one really has an answer to why it happens.
There are a few threads floating around at the moment with people complaining of the same symptoms. http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadID=102170 http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadID=101929 http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...ThreadID=96634 I too have had this problem and have also had the car checked on a gas analyser with the all clear. Maybe the TD04L has weak seals? What ever the case we need to get to the bottom of it pronto!!!! Iain |
How many of the cars that are doing this have Dawes/Bleed Valve/EBCs fitted. Raised boost on the smaller turbos will stress them and the seals can go - they did on my car! I killed the poor little VF28!
Trout :D |
If it was piston faliure would the car still drive as normal?
Ian |
There's any number of things this could be but i'd say the most likely is valve guides or turbo seals. You don't tend to get piston ring failure showing up as oil burning when at idle.
|
If the car is on the factory fuel cut it will not be running more boost than the PPP does except at the top end when using a manual boost controller.
|
If it was the piston ring, it would still drive as normal. Of course you'd be filling up the oil as much as the petrol....
|
Yet another one http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadid=102841
I am getting more and more suspicious of the Turbo Seals now................... Iain |
Is a decat downpipe the common theme in all these??
greg |
Greg, yes i think so
|
oh bum, was looking at getting a dpipe, maybe will see how this pans out.

Trout,
My car was doing this before anything had been touched, mind you i don't know how the previous owner treated the car. But a very valid point nevertheless. Maybe a nice VF23 / 24 should be considered :D :D Iain [Edited by iain atkins - 6/7/2002 9:54:24 AM] |
