2.5 to 2.1 WRX, would this be a fairly easy swap?
Hey guys,
Just a question about a swap. How easy would it be to swap this engine : A new build 2.1 stroker engine - 2.0 STI Closed Deck bottomblock - 2.5 STI crank - higher compression (8:1 > 8.9:1) - Wiseco pistons - Eagle rods - ARP bolts (all) - ACL bearings (all) - Cometic steel headgaskets - STI air/oil seperation plate - STI timing belt guiders - Gates stronger timing belt - Complete distributie (ca. 20k km oud) - Legacy Phase 2 DOHC Single AVCS heads - STI in- en out exhaustvalves - JUN titanium valveretainers - STI valvesprings - Originele MY00 camshaft (enige originele in het blok :P) - Cosworth baffleplate - new carterpan Into a 2005 wrx hawkeye with a 2.5 ltr? Is it fairly plug and play or will it be alot of work? Thanks in advance! |
what heads is it running? will need a remap
|
Hey again!
Sti heads from a closed deck 96" And yea, remap will be done ofcourse. Just wondering if swapping the engine is a big hassle. (If it comes that far i will ring a professional subie garage to do it for me ofcourse) Thanks |
Fairly straight forward taking engine out and putting it back in, loads of video's on youtube. Probably going to be some issues regards the heads with cam timing and possibly loom and a few other bits, most would tend to fit the WRX heads to the 2.1L block, you'll need to speak to a specialist about what needs doing as I don't know the differences between the heads and cam sensors.

Alright, cool. So wont be putting thousands on euro's in it just to fit it right? Im thinking about the option to buy the 2005 hawk i like and maybe the 2.1 stroker to put it in later. Although its probably recommended to Change to a 6 speed gearbox for the 2.1 stroker i guess? Thanks ditch |
wrx box will run 400 ok so depends how far you push it.
Personaly i'd wanna keep the 2.5 and just get it built right |

Drop in pistons, rods and headgasket may well be doable in that price, as long as it hasn;t failed and done any damage.
bear in mind the hawk wrx is only worth 5-6k even in top nick |

Thing is,
Ofcourse, i could import like you guys said. Twinscroll and all, really nice cars. Though the import and other fees will be close to 3k grand quickly i think So that will go off my budget. Plus ikl have a right side drive wich i dont really mind but its hard to sell again here in the netherlands. ^_^ |
Loads of guys in europe buying cars from the UK. One important thing to remember is the JDM engine can run close to 500bhp and the gearbox can also take that.
I live in Europe and drive a RHD Impreza, it's really not a problem, you just have to hang back a bit so you can see before overtaking, which isn't a problem even with a lowly 260bhp that mine has I fly past most things. If I were you I would seriously look into the costs involved, JDM STI's are always going to be more desirable than a modded WRX no matter what the spec, so it's a much better place to put your money, there is also nothing to stop you breaking the car and selling it in pieces when you're done with it, which will also offer a better return as all the parts are very desirable, in the UK and Europe. ;) |

Hi there
Really depends on more factors,if you will be using different heads then you can run into issues as yours AVCS heads using different sensors(I think Hawkeye using hall effect and earlier hasn't I think they using VR) which can be issue although engine spec looks OK,but those rods I wouldn't use on Subaru,I would swap them for better rods if you could something like Manley,,K1 and Carrillo if you feel flush Cometic headgasket are problematic and due this I would use OE MLS or Cosworth headgasket as they're best And about the heads, they're not bad,but you can find better heads something like JDM Big port are best and with them you shouldn't have any issue on longer run,we are run WRX heads although with AVCS,but we are struggled to make beyond 500bhp with them, with better heads I would say 500bhp has been possible And about the other options like build 2.5L,I would speak with Alyn@AS Performance or any other good engine builder without the question,I'm pretty sure he can build for you good engine for those money and if budget allows then I would add or do full CDB conversion which Alyn can make for reasonable money And if yours 5 speed would take it,hard to say,but late Hawkeye 5speed seems hold high power bit better than earlier WRX boxes, but above 400bhp,I would go with 6speed or if you want to be different then 5speed with PPG internals And yes I would agree with above,JDM STI will be better option, than modify yours WRX to STI spec,we are done same and if this has worth it,hard to say,but I wouldn't do that again,WRX is great car if you don't want to modify or modify just up to 350bhp,beyond that everything will be very expensive and is not worth it Hope this helps and good luck there Thanks,Jura |
It's torque that kills gearboxes not power (driver has an affect also). A forged 2.5 will have more torque than a 2.1. My 2.1 is making 330+ lbs ft on a Blob 5 speed and is fine.
