Glad he got away. Extremely fortunate bloke. |
That is what you call a genuine change of underwear moment  It wasn't a tiddler either from the size of the dorsal fin.

Extremely lucky!

Ruined a good final too.
A shame; he's probably my favourite surfer too; raw power. |
That's got to make you think twice about getting in the water surely!
When I was 'surfing' in Tenerife (was there a few months) something brushed past my leg (only ever in shorts and rash vest) once when I was sat on the board. That **** me up enough and it was probably just a fish (don't know if there's even sharks round there?) but when you got away from the really shallow volcanic rock it suddenly dropped off and the deep water just looked scary as anything. |
I have windsurfed in South Africa, and you certainly get on your board pretty quick after a fall!!!!!
and you can never quite get the "der dum der dum" noise out of your head but I have also sailed a lot in Maui, and Hawaii has more shark attacks than anywhere else in the world I did see a fin as I came over the back of a wave once, that focuses the mind on the next gybe.... |

. and they deffo have sharks, including the Great White - one was spotted on one trip I was on the sea = sharks, so you have to get used to it anyone going to the Med this year, caught just off the coast of Sicily http://ffaasstt.swide.com/wp-content...gnana-1981.jpg |
Mate reckons he saw fin of killer whale off the coast Sussex here whilst we were windsurfing, I'm 99% certain he's misguided , but. Apparently they can exist here
|
I'm sure youre safer windsurfing though since sail in the water doesn't look like seal to Mr shark
|
I surfed Kaikoura, NZ for three weeks with rumours of a White Pointer about; as we drove South, the radio confirmed it was a 15ft Great White.
Surfing Byron was nerve racking too; someone was eaten three weeks after I'd surfed it. A mate got munched in SA too; nearly lost his leg but made a killing from the tabloids! I spend so much time in the sea and see some awesome sights; a humpback whale about 30ft away, Dolphins diving out of the face of a big wave in Winter, countless seals, some a bit too curious, sunfish, etc. Sharks aren't a worry but seeing a harmless basking shark still gets the heart thudding. It's funny, all the major media is now an "expert" on sharks AND surfing... |

The Med contains some of the largest Great Whites on the planet yet it never gets the media attention like Aus or SA does probably because they don't tend to come as close to shore and stay out in the deeper waters.
I think one reason they keep to the deep water is that they like quite temperate water (i.e. cold) due to the way they hunt, they need to keep there body temperature higher than the water around them - and in the warm shallows of the med they would overheat |
Great White breeding grounds are usually cool; SA, Southern Oz, South NZ. The Med is an odd one.
But I'll just keep talking to myself shall I? |
|
Ive dived in waters around the world & when your up close to a small shark of say 4 or 5ft long they can still make your heat skip a beat.
|
I thought you meant this sort of shark: http://www.xvideos.com/video667601/european_sharking
Warning: NSFW!!!!! |

yes if you where conspiracy minded it would be tempting to believe that all the countries around the med conspire to keep it out of the news to protect the tourists trade (ps we are off to Greece next week!!!!)

I'm off to Tenerife and never go in the sea, I hate not being able to see what is around me so only go in if i'm snorkeling. Can't stand that sensation of stuff moving around your feet in the sand or fish brushing your legs but you can't see what it is :Suspiciou  |

Yep not the greatest for business if it was widely known the Med had the biggest Great Whites and plenty of them too.

There was a time when sharking was at its peak on SN. :D
|
that does not makes sense
essentially you are saying, there was a time when there was a time |

Sharks are everywhere. I remember one of the surf shops in Newquay had a board hanging up with a bite the size of a dustbin lid that had been taken out of it, apparently in Fistral Bay. The council made them take it down.

|
Well I spend hours and hours each week in the sea but don't worry about it at all. No recorded attacks here ever.
