How are you

Following on from "take care" , is this the obligatory greeting to echo the yankie "have a nice you'll"

Is it rude not to come up with this phrase on encountering , anyone ?

ReallyReallyGoodMeat 15 July 2015 12:00 PM

The modern equivalent of the equally meaningless "How do you do?"

dpb 15 July 2015 12:03 PM

Is it ??

Certain phrases become parts of the etiquette and they need not be taken so literally. I'd rather say "how are you" to the ones I'm greeting than stay just dumb at greeting them. Also, by asking how they are, I'm showing interest in their being rather than just shaking their hand/ saying just a hello and acknowledging merely their bodily existence.

The ones that don't have much value for social etiquettes or the ones with limited social skills/confidence may find things like "how are you" hard to render/accept/hear.

The one I think I the most stupid is when people say "are you winning" when they see you at work.

Better than being answered with "why, are you a doctor"?

Unless you are a professional poker player

You can't beat a bit of the "Touch Base" and "Going forwards" Brigade :D

I work with these type of Bellends daily.....the suit you wear, the watch you tell the time with.........it's utter BS

makes me queasy that my African girlfriend feels she is expected to repeat this bollox every time she makes work enquiries tbh

Turbohot 15 July 2015 10:35 PM

This has just made me think of the stranger cold callers on phone. When they try acting familiar with "how are you" to me, I feel like saying- "what's got to do with you? Why don't you just get real and get off my line??". In that context, I'm afraid it certainly is very annoying. That's where it has nothing to do with any etiquette but trapping people into their business by acting false to them.

Also work related, and equally stupid imo, is 'are you busy' when you are clearly in the middle of doing something, in my case, quite often humping stock about. :brickwall

Obviously I don't have a problem with being stopped from a particular job, as my main role is customer service, I'd just rather a simple 'excuse me, can you help' (or words to that effect), than yet another stupid question. That said, it's still an improvement over people shouting 'you, over here!', sometimes even with a click of the fingers/point or whistle.

I find this comment is usually made by management ,

It's like a thoughtless exchange .. Waiter asked me the other day if my food was ok, apparently he was expecting me to say yeah great .. when I said actually it's poor, he said brilliant and walked off ..

Turbohot 18 July 2015 12:35 PM

Any false exchange is a bullsh7t exchange. I have energy guys ringing me with their opening crap like 'how are you today, madam?'. Not that they give a ferk how I am today, tomorrow or the next day. I also find that weird when some people you know bump into you and say- 'I've been meaning to ring you'. It's bull because if they did, they would have rung me at least once in the last year or so.
