ABS sensor removal and refit.
 

My o/s rear abs sensor cable was cut by a garage for some reason while fitting a new CV boot and then bodged back together(don't ask!!) So now I've bought a used one and need some info on how to fit it.

I had a look earlier and I can't see where the cable runs too going from the rear wheel?

Has anyone done this and if so, is it a pig?

cable runs to plug under rear seats just unplug it. 10 min job.:thumb:

No, not tackled it yet. It's a UK classic turbo.

I'm just a bit concerned about taking the sensor out the hub. I'm guessing it was stuck in there and that's why the cable was it in the first place :(

So I'm back on this. The car has been sat on my drive for a while and finally giving this a go. I have got everything off apart from the sensor out the hub! Can anyone give me any tips on removing this or is it just wedged in there with 15 years of dirt and grime?

It just won't budge. Oh and there was no bolt on there so looks like that's why the garage cut the wire ��

Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes, it's basically a B'stard to get ABS sensors out of hubs in my experience. I go for the destroy option, a drill and a blow torch. Be careful not to damage the hole, be amazed at how much copper wire comes out and wear goggles. I've done two so far.

wow i must have been lucky then mine came out with no issues. simple job according to my garage :thumb:

If the bearing is been done they are easy to remove with a 10mm deep socket over them and a tap.

If you cant get a socket over it it can be more of a struggle

Why not just join the wires.

Thanks for the replies. I thought I'd be able to remove without taking the disk off but it appears not :(.

I tried joining the wires and this is what the garage did(badly) but there is so little left at the sensor side it makes it almost impossible to do.

Next weekends job for me then.

Before you get to involved with changing the sensor connect the replacement to the plug under the back seat to make sure it at least puts the abs light out on the dash.

It needs replaced anyway but hopefully the new/secondhand one I have works.

Only going from my experience so i hope it helps..

Was the bolt removed or did the bolt head snap? Just a heads-up because you may need to drill out the remnants of the bolt.

You will be able to drive the sensor out with a properly sized punch if you just remove the brake disc. I would, however, first make sure that you can't move the grommet on the sensor cable as there is probably sufficient slack in it on the cabin side to enable you to connect the wires back together.

Lastly do make sure that the new sensor plugs into your car's harness. There were different plugs over the years.

Another good call about the bolt. I hope it's not sheered off :(.

So the new sensor plugs in and turns the light off so that's all good.

When I take the disk off, if I see any issues I might try to connect the existing cables up again. There's not much left at the sensor side due to the garage cutting it quite close to it and then the cable degrading inside due to water getting in.

I'll up date how I get on when I finally get it done.

Some would say take it back to the garage and get them to do it as they damaged it in the first place. Why should you have the hassle?

Hope you are lucky and can rejoin the cable but mine had perished due to water ingress after the insulation had been damaged on the cable and the copper wire was corroded and crumbled to pieces right up to the plug under the back seat so it was a replacement sensor for me.

I would have done this however it was about a year down the line when I noticed the wire had been cut due to the abs light coming on I so can't really prove it was him. Also, I don't want them touching it again.(back street garage) my own fault. :(

It's more than just taking the rear disc off to get at it, Dave.

The ABS ring and all the handbrake mech is in the way, if you were planning on trying to knock it out.

Still not sorted yet. I've not had a chance. (Working and rain!). I've not been using it so it's just sat in the drive. I think it's cause I was at for so long and failed, that I just put the wheel back on and gave up. Hopefully I'll get it done next week. Whether that be the new one on or connect the cable properly.

If the sensor is the same as early cars, which I think it is, where the bolt mounts it's like a tab.

Fold it back, and get hold of it with mole grips, then rag it about until it comes out. Corrosion will be holding it in.

It's sat on my drive right now. As soon as it's sorted I'll update this. I think I'll be connecting the wires up again to get it back on the road.

I fully understand and the weather and early dark nights dont help much.

So I managed to get the old sensor out after taking off the hub and battering it out with a 12 mm socket and a hammer. Connected the new/used sensor, At this point the abs light was still on but I presumed this was because it wasn't in place when I tried it again. Fitted the the new sensor put the hub back on and the light is still feckin on:mad::mad:

Is there something going on here I'm missing or is this other sensor not working? Is there anyway if telling if I have another problem?

I might get this car fixed yet:(
