Sore calf muscles

Coming from the bike to the run this Saturday's triathlon

What's best exercise to remedy this, any ideas?

Paben 07 July 2015 08:51 AM

When I was doing triathlons much focus was placed on training the transition from bike to run. I'm sure it still is. Despite this 'jelly legs' were always something of a feature for me for the first mile or so of the run after which the legs sorted themselves out and became running legs again.

I run like a complete muppet for about the first half mile into the run then I'm sort of back in the groove.

Massage rollers are good; I've just bought one off Amazon.

Decent sports massage, with a focus on your lower leg.

Oh, and that sensation you get when transitioning between bike and run - it's called "fun!" :)

I think I did too much on the bike again , not enough to actually pull up on the run this time , but I shouldn't be feeling it still surely going down stairs - was only 5k run !

Thanks

87% certain I did 7 instead 6 laps on the bike ( I don't have fancy watch yet) . That dropped me 15 places

I am completely crippled a at least two days after a race.
I usually do better than expected but I sure do pay for it!

While it didn't help the total elapsed time I always found that cruising the final mile or so of the bike helped the run. The worst thing for me was riding full tilt to the transition - that could mean a horrible run.

I had in my mind to do something very similar Peban :D

But ...being laps its difficult to resist going for the twenty year old that's just overhauled you on some boneshaker lol

Agree. If I go flat out for the last couple of kms my legs are useless at the start of the run. I remember once when I was running with the bike to transition I looked like I'd had 10 pints :D

Soreness in your calves can usually be got rid of with a deep massage. Do what I did, marry a Physio and get a massage straight after the event.

The sea swim I mucked up on the outward leg , just couldn't get the breathing right to coincide with air rather than water ( force 4 winds) , thankfully I wasn't alone with this - half the field seemed to be doing itermintant breaststroke or treading water . I actually thought couple times id never make it to the buoy , 400 meters

For some reason after rounding it I was immediately into some rythym breathing away from the rollers and didn't stop till the end , another 400

Swim to cycle can be rather interesting too - again it often looks like you're drunk.

On my last tri I sliced my foot wide open exciting the sea without properly realising. I'd done the same tri the year before (19th out of 260ish) and felt a bit odd - my leg kept cramping. Anyway I carried on a little too slow for my liking and got to the run - always my fastest bit. Overtook loads of people but my foot really was moaning. Staggered in 46th out of about 270, took my shoe off, it was totally filled with blood. Ambulance, surgery, limping for a few months. Stitches in feet REALLY flipping hurt!

Ah very useful Coupe !

Very true but as road racing was my discipline before triathlon I usually had no difficulty stuffing these kids on the bike only to have them trot past me again on the run. Very frustrating!

I'm 50 so nearly everyone's younger than me in an open Tri! :lol1:

dpb 08 July 2015 01:23 PM

Couple years ago the guy who came second in the sprint was 63 !!!
So ill keep going for a while (49) I reckon

This year o noticed there was a forteen year old doing it ( youngest allowed) , and that the person out the water first was female in an slightly unbelievable 12:30 (750m)

I was 24:30 , and couldn't manage anywhere near 12:30 IN A SWIMMING POOL !

Matteeboy 08 July 2015 01:28 PM

12m30 is loony quick. I don't hang about but it still takes me around 18mins to do 1000m in our local 20m pool.

dpb 08 July 2015 02:52 PM

Apparently she was quiet stocky, so the arms must been going round like windmills lol

Matteeboy 08 July 2015 03:08 PM

I've often overtaken really quick swimmers on the bike; often "stocky" too; ideal for swimming, not so handy for hauling up a long hill on a bike or on foot!
