Fitting newage intercooler on classic

I'm just in the middle of fitting a Newage intercooler to my 1998 classic.

I bought this Y pipe

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Impreza-WR...item233188215d

And just had a look at this guide, but struggling with the Y pipe, the bottom section that connects to the turbo does not line up right. I've cut a section off but still way out. Just had a look a this guide, but i'm fitting WRX intercooler not STI.

Anyone done this on there classic's can give abit of advice thanks

Davec30 03 July 2015 04:39 PM

Just looked at the link. I done this and used the tls y pipe from my classic inter cooler but the bolt on parts came with the newage cooler so used them. Maybe that's the wrong size?

I don't know what i'm doing wrong will have to get some pictures up. The bracket on the drivers side seems to be in the way of the intercooler sitting correctly. Does this have to be cut?

Ive fitted a newage TMIC to my 95 classic, things i had to do were

Cut the throttle body down to allow fitment of TMIC between the throttle body and bulk head, otherwsie it was uber tight and knocked

i used the SAMCO flexi Y Pipe

i reshaped the metal area above the gearbox support bracket as the Y pipe knocked on this on gear changes

trimmed down the Y Pipe to fit onto turbo as it was too long

Trimmed down the samco throttle body to TMIC hose as again , it was uber tight so needed as much room as possible

i bent and reshaped the TMIC support brackets from gearbox to TMIC

Get some pics up bud and show where your struggling

This is a very old reply i did for someone i just found,, with some pics

From

To

with the 2003 undertray adapted to suit the classic bonnet/mounting holes

Attachment 45964

and of course, the scoop to suit LOL

Attachment 45965

This is the bit (pic borrowed from the net) i had to "manipulate" to get the TMIC to sit properly and not hit/rub/vibrate when engine moved etc

Attachment 45966

As said, there is alot involved to get it to fit, where the dumpvalve goes on the TMIC is welded, but you can get cover plates instead, which is easier/cheaper.

The throttle body has also been shortened, where the outlet meets the TMIC to allow fitment as it would be very very tight against the bulkhead

If thats not put you off,go for it LOL :thumb:

Cheers bud your a star :thumb:

I already found your old thread on search

I have a slightly different setup than yours, I thought it was going to be a lot more straight forward and just simply reshaping the side brackets so the intercooler would mount on them correctly.

When you say you had to cut the throttle body down, do you mean the metal part? Or hose?

No worries :-)

on the throttle body the metal circumfrance needs trimming, i cut the lip off and that gives alot more room between throttle body and the TMIC, if you dont trim it, it fits but its wedged against the bulkhead, also makes getting the silicone throttle body to TMIC hose on very hard if you dont trim it.

The bit in the pic i put a square round, i flattened totally on the edges and also cut off a bit as once flattened, i couldnt remove the gearbox support bar (different job , another day i had to do)

Davec30 04 July 2015 04:38 PM

Ah do you have the slanted inter cooler? If not you shouldn't need to cut any metal apart from the near side inter cooler bracket(from the classic top mount) hole that attaches to the engine, this needs made bigger and the bracket needs bent.

I'm thinking the setup you bought is for the sti top mount?!

Edit; you might need to trim the silicone throttle body to tmic hose slightly.

I have a 2000 UK turbo. Same TMIC and only had to do the bracket mod.

What year is yours though? As the one on the passenger side does not line up at all.

2000 x reg. yeah it's the passenger side one you need to bend. There are 2 holes in the bracket at the engine side. I just used the one when putting it back together and made the hole oval shape to fit. To bend the bracket I used a good old hammer.

Also I had to use a small piece of metal about 2 inches long for the driver side bracket to reach.

I'll try and get photos for you.

Just noticed, I didn't use the hole I made bigger as it wasn't big enough so just used the one.

Using the newage under tray as a templet, I cut and bent the classic under tray with a dremal and then attached the rubber seal from the newage to it. ( drilled holes and used the small plastic clips )

Cheers for the pictures Dave thats very helpfull. My engine is a slightly different layout, the DV outlet is tight against the inlet manifold see picture. Where you have loads of space :(

Although I have a thin adaptor for DV outlet, so if I buy a new pipe form the inlet manifold to the intercooler and make a bracket for drivers side I think It will sort that problem out.

Ah so it is. Never noticed that. At least you can see how the brackets fit. I take it you sorted the initial problem with the y pipe?

Oh and just a heads up. I found trying to get the recirc pipe on a nightmare. You should fit that onto the engine before you final fit the tmic or you'll have no access to where it goes.

Right here's some pictures.

I finally managed to cut the Y pip to fit on turbo. On mine I have no room for recirculating DV, I've had to buy an adaptor. You can see why by looking at 2nd picture.

Jeez, no room at all

jaygsi 07 July 2015 07:59 PM

I know, so i need to find now where i can get a longer pipe from inlet manifold to the intercooler. I'm hoping that it won't foul anything else, i'm sure i will find out when finished.

Good luck. Let us know how you get on:thumb:

Ok thanks, will do, ordered a new pipe for inlet to intercooler, but the intercooler is still not sitting right, seems to be higher on the drivers side. Hopefully i don't have to cut the mount thats attached to the gear box.

Rescue Dude 09 July 2015 10:31 AM

When I fitted a new age intercooler to my V3 I originally used a metal Y pipe but it knocked like crazy on the rear engine mount so I then got a new age silicone Y pipe.
This was much better but it would occasionally blow off the turbo. :brickwall

To stop this I cut the Y pipe and added a section of the correct diameter metal pipe to make the bottom part of the Y about half an inch longer. Since doing that it fits perfectly and hasn't blown off. That was a few years ago and has been problem free.

Thanks for input and picture, your engine layout is same as mine, did you have problems with the mount from the gear box getting in the way?

I see your DV exit point has been wielded up, could of done with intercooler like that.

No problem with the mount as the guy I bought it all off had made up a pair of adapted mounts. Not brilliant but they do the job.

jaygsi 09 July 2015 02:32 PM

Do you have a picture of the side bracket? I'm sure i can make one easy enough, have a few sheets of metal here.

So you don't find it sits to high on one side?

Which side? I don't have a pic of the other side. They brackets may look a bit gash but they do teh job and you can't really see them anyway.

What ever gets it fitted. Mean't drivers side, not to worry, it still doesn't sit right.

erasmus 06 November 2019 03:57 PM

any chance anyone would fit newage ic to my v1 classic?

jaygsi 07 November 2019 12:07 AM

I never fitted one to mine in the end. Went for classic STI intercooler. Try Subaru specialist, where bouts are you?
