SLK - FAO F1_FAN

F1, or anyone else for that matter

How often should an SLK need topping up with 1L of oil?

Thanks

should it use oil?

Anything less that 6/7k and I would say there is a problem

(But I know nothing about those engines tbh, just going my experience with all sorts of modern engines)

I know a subaru dealership once told me that heavy oil consumption in the scooby was "by design" due to wide tolerances

Even so My MY2000 scooby needed topping up every 500 of miles, maybe even less

Was a real pain in the arse and one reason I sold it

Both my current cars (diesels ) use virtually no oil between changes (although I change the oil every 6 odd months, which is 8 odd k)

My wife's SLK 320 uses very little oil, but that's 6 cylinder. Perhaps the 4 cylinder versions are different.

It appears mb state around 2000 mile per litre of oil. Seems excessive. Was about 8k for me.

ridiculous

on a brighter note - in 10K you have actually changed the oil

Sounds like the Merc brand have the same problems Audi suffer with i.e.excessive oil consumption which the dealers say is normal ...

Wasn't it the RX8 that virtually needed more oil than fuel. Lol

Otherwise thought most other cars pretty normal

If its kompressor, it'll probably lose about a pint of oil through the wiring loom every few thousand miles. ;)

(Yes, the wiring does leak oil).

All engines use oil to an extent...people who say their engine doesn't aren't realising their oil being burnt is is actually been replaced with unburnt fuel.

As a rough rule...any more than pint every 1000miles is excessive IMO, although its often within manufacturer's tolerances.

Of course that's using the correct 229.31 (or 229.5 etc.) oil. If the engine has been run on something else in the past, well, sadly its too late to put the right oil in now.

No it wasn't - about half a litre of 10/40 semi synthetic per 1500 miles is about right in an RX8, which incidentally is less than most German / French / japenese cars I have owned have consumed. ;)

golf gti mk5 - 1 litre per 600 miles is normal according to the owners manual!
