What should we pay for an Apple i5 repair?

It needs new battery as the old one no longer holds charge, and the charging socket needs replaced.

It belongs to my youngest, he's just traded up to an i6, giving this one to his mum.

I'm guessing you iPhone 5 battery. Apple have a battery replacement program for the iPhone 5. However, it has to meet a certain criteria in order to be eligible. Try the link if you can get a free replacement, otherwise I think Apple will charge £40-£50. I had mine replaced last year.

Get a new more modern phone , for same money probably !

JackClark 27 June 2015 12:20 AM

Batteries are £10 in my local phone shop. They'd tackle a power supply as well. Or look on ifixit.com buy the parts and let him fix it.

Check its not just fluff in the socket. Gently Di g it out with a toothpick if there's some in there ;)

alcazar 27 June 2015 01:50 PM

Thanks for replies, we are checking the serial number for a free battery once he gets up...was on 15 hour nights last week.

alcazar 27 June 2015 02:50 PM

Not in the affected range. We'll get it done at one of Honest Asian shops in town, LOL.

Ant 28 June 2015 04:41 PM

For someone to change the battery should cost no more than £15 as the batteries are only £4-£5 and takes two minutes

alcazar 29 June 2015 11:23 AM

Been quoted £50 for battery and charging port change.

Aren't Asian shops honest folk?

mickeymouse 29 June 2015 02:15 PM

Plenty of vids out their on how to change batteries ( I think!! I've never really looked tbh!) I changed my screen ages ago on my 4s as mine was cracked.. Pretty easy in all honesty just VERY fiddly!! The screws are tiny!!

The battery shouldn't be THAT much different

Have ago..:thumb:

alcazar 30 June 2015 05:41 AM

I have a feeling that the charging port may be more difficult, some tiny soldering, maybe?

Ant 30 June 2015 10:49 AM

nope very easy

alcazar 30 June 2015 12:15 PM

Smart, thanks. I'll be having a go at that when I get back in September.

New battery £8, charging port £5, I already own watchmaker's tools, so £37 saved if it works.

scooberuni 01 July 2015 01:48 AM

I recently changed mine, battery cost me about £10 and it came with the little tools aswell. The slight problem I had was that the battery needed to be fully charged and then fully drained quite a few times before it worked properly.

alcazar 01 July 2015 08:48 PM

That's odd...I wonder why?

Ant 01 July 2015 09:54 PM

It shouldn't need to be done I've changed loads for people and never had to that

I read somewhere on the internet that the phone has to learn what the maximum and minimum levels are for the new battery so charging it up fully and running it down again to 0% does this. Anyway, mine works now and it didn't cost me the earth to get it done so I'm happy. Until something else goes wrong with it at least lol

alcazar 04 July 2015 08:36 AM

That might be it.

RobJenks 06 July 2015 06:31 AM

You will need a pentalobe screw driver to remove the back cover.

alcazar 06 July 2015 08:27 AM

I THINK you get one in the battery kit.

scooberuni 08 July 2015 03:21 AM

You definitely need a Pentelobe screwdriver I'd say, I tried with a tiny screwdriver from my jewellers kit and I found that I could get the screws out easily enough but when I tried putting them back in again, they wouldn't sit flush.

alcazar 08 July 2015 08:44 AM

Most of the battery kits come with the tools, I believe.

mickeymouse 08 July 2015 09:39 PM

My screen came with tools if not maplin should stock them .

scoobyskool 08 July 2015 10:53 PM

my 5 was getting very hot ,,,, apple swapped it free as soon as i told them it had actually felt like it burnt me when in my pocket
