fmic install idle problems advice needed

Car is 2004 jdm sti blob,
Just finished fitting fmic, induction kit and hks recirc dump valve! I know i now need a remap but i thought i'd turn the car back over to make sure it still starts, Car starts fine and cel goes out as normal however car now idles awful doesnt stall the engine but almost does! Try to use throttle to build up revs but theres about 2 second delayed response from the throttle!
Is this normal or is there something i may have missed?
I can upload a video if it helps?
Any advise would be much appreciated! Like i said i know the car now needs a remap which will be done as soon as possible, i just cant see how i could even drive it to the nearest place for a remap (roger clarke) may have to get the car trailered
Regards
Brad

Remap needed mate as you said, its as simple as that really:).SJ.

stonejedi 25 May 2015 11:37 AM

Just to follow up on that,Without a remap at best all that happens is that you do not release the full potential now the FMIC is fitted. At worst your engine needs a lot more fuel, possibly in areas of the map that the car could not get to before with the top mount and if the car is held in these areas it is only a matter of time before you pick up a piston in the bore.Usually the best way to do it is to get all the mods that you require for your next power stage i.e FMIC,Injectors,FPR,Induction kit ,Exhaust,etc....Then fit them and get your car mapped it then makes the cost of the mapping more viable with an increased substantial improvement in BHP and Torque.SJ.

Thanks sj
I knew the car wouldnt run well with the fmic etc i didnt realise it would be quite that bad! Think i will just get the car trailered to roger clarke for the remap just to be on the safe side!
Yes thats what ive done, fitted majority of the parts in one go all ready for the remap now!
So currently the car has fmic, full 3" system with downpipe, k&n induction cone, hks recirc dump valve and as far as i know walbro 255 fuel pump! I also have 720cc injectors and a 340lph hrc fuel pump which arent on the car would you recommended i fit these now or at the next stage which is sc42 (Late this year/early next year)
Also is there any other parts you recommend for the stage im at now?
Regards
Brad

stonejedi 25 May 2015 11:59 AM

In all honesty its completely up to you,as either way when you fit the turbo you will need another remap.Plus with the mods that you are running now the standard 550cc injectors will be more then enough to cope.So i personally would wait for the SC42 turbo to get fitted then get the 720cc injectors fitted at the same time, and have that next upgrade of mods as stage 3 ;).SJ.

Check for any air leaks in the pipework, it should idle.

I would chuck a 3 port bcs on there as well, if there is isn't one fitted already.

Me too;)AS bengo has said a 3 port boost solenoid would make for better boost delivery and quicker boost spool up,overall better boost control for your car.SJ.

It may already have a 3 port boost solenoid on as a previous owner had already fitted a few mods! (Rolled 322bhp 360ft lbs at scoobyclinic)
Where would it be located so u can check if it has one?

Jdm-brad 25 May 2015 12:28 PM

Thanks for the replys,
I was happy with how id done all the clips up! Double checked everyone before turning it over! Will the car be ok to start back up to check for leaks? Whats my alternative smoke test?
Regards
Brad

If i was you i would just get it transported to RCM just to be on the safe side, there is only so much that you can go back over and check being systematic with all the hoses and clips that you have fitted, sounds to me that it just needs mapping and setting up properly and the Guys at RCM is a step in the right direction and you will definitely be in very safe hands.SJ.

Jdm-brad 25 May 2015 01:38 PM

Thanks sj
Im off out now but i will have a look later when im back! If i havent got one ill get one ordered!
Thanks for all your help!
Think bengo might be on to something with air leaks, debating asking a friend to smoke test it...

Thats a cold start too! Usually idles betweem 1k-2k revs

veerinder9 25 May 2015 02:16 PM

Tbh when i changed over to a fmic on my old classic i didn't have any idle issues. Every car is different but was told it'll be fine if kept without boost. But i did have it mapped shortly after. I'd check all the pipework clips and hoses etc

cookstar 25 May 2015 03:11 PM

I don't remember symptoms like that when I changed to FMIC. Are you sure all plugs have gone back that your removed?

Pipe on properly for air recirc?

Maff plugged in?

Any vacuum lines off?

cookstar 25 May 2015 03:13 PM

In fact my car runs better than that with NO intercooler piped up. My money is on something else.

I agree to an extent with your check list,my wife's classic was OK with an intercooler change but my newage cut out and idled low too,but i also agree that it does sound like it could be a air leak of some sort or IACV,MAF problems etc.....But sometimes its best to just let a specialist check it out as its going to RCM for the map anyways, better then just shooting in the dark, but saying that...if it ran fine before you fitted your upgrade parts it only makes common sense that something that was done has made the car not to happy.Good luck with what you decide that your going to do either way, keep us informed if you do find out what the gremlin was;).SJ.

cookstar 25 May 2015 05:31 PM

Could just disconnect both FMIC pipes, and quickly whip old TMIC back on, would obviously rule out intercooler then.

Recovery costs to RCM will obviously cost, so could be worth the time.

Might be an oddball, but I'm sure I remember hearing about some induction kits that could allow you to fit MAF in the wrong way round?

imprezagaz 25 May 2015 06:25 PM

You haven't caught the throttle position sensor have you?

i would check this as above and compare the size of the new maf housing to the old if its a lot larger this can give you idle problems as the scaling will be out.

Ive literally just been on the phone to a friend talking about it and i was saying to him that i had to fit the maf sensor 180° (opposite way round to its standard position) as the cable wouldnt alow it to go the opposite way! I assumed that it would be fine as i was to belive it was just a probe type thing and the direction of air across it wouldnt make a difference (lack of knowledge) could something as simple as this be my problem?
Unfortunetly i dont have time to sort it now as i go away on holiday tomorrow so its going to have to wait a week untill im back to look at it! I'll keep people updated when im back!
Thankyou everyone for your replies im sure i wont have any problems sorting it once im back from the responses ive had :thumb:

Btw, do you have any pics of the induction kit? You haven't got an induction pipe in the wrong way around have you?
