Drive train oil recommendations?
Hey,
I have an '04 Blob eye STI and I'm planning to have some fun in it next week at North Wealds test and tune RWYB. Obviously I want to make sure everything's up to scratch before I start launching it so just wondered which oil is required for drivetrain components. I know different rear diff oil is recommended for different types of diff but not sure which setup my STI has? And with regards to the front diff and transfer box do they share the oil or independent items? I know in my partners Evo the front diff and gearbox share the same oil but transfer box has seperate oil? I've not had a chance to get underneath and have a look yet so if someone could help with what oil is needed and capacities to service gearbox, front diff, transfer box and rear diff. Thanks! |
If your car is pre DCCD it takes 4.1 litres in the gearbox/front diff 75w/90 semi or full synthetic to GL5 spec. The rear diff takes 0.8 litres of the same fluid.
Are you just checking or replacing? If replacing, don't forget there's two drain plugs for the gearbox/diff. One under the diff section and another in a small sump at the bottom of the gearbox. You need to remove the smaller plastic cover under the box to get to this. Re-fill through the dipstick tube. JohnD |
I'll be changing them, what about the transfer box?
Does the g/box and rear diff require an oil with LSD additives? |
Does it have DCCD?
|
There's no transfer box fluid to replace.
If it's pre DCCD standard GL5 spec fluid is used. Opie oils will have all you need but you'll have to hurry if you want to get it and do the change before Sunday! Does your other half belong to the MLR? JohnD |
It doesn't have the electronic centre diff no. So to get this straight gearbox fluid change also covers front diff and transfer box?
Forgot it was bank holiday so either way won't get it in time now :( Yes he's a member of MLR :) |

JohnD PS Go to the NWeald event anyway. I usually go to spectate although I really should try the STi on the strip. |
I'm sure a couple of runs won't do any damage, the engine oil and filter are sparkly fresh and it's just had a cambelt, water pump and coolant change so pretty healthy!
