Would it be possible for the Big End to go on a Fully/Serviced Subaru 98? If not I can hear a tapping noise form my Engine, like metal on metal checked oil level ok there ??????????????

It goes up and down with the revs?
It stops when it's been running for a while?
Any ideas?

Jolly Green Monster 2 06 June 2002 12:14 PM

Probably the tappets... mine tap occassionally from cold.. usually when it is due a service... the oil change sorts it out.

Someone else must be able to help?

98 Car. Piston slap?? I don't know to be honest but that's a known problem on that year of car

Otis 07 June 2002 08:36 PM

I agree, it could well be the 98 piston slap problem. The search facility isn't working so try and scan back through this forum for other postings on the subject, I'm afraid you won't have to look far .

Try getting it to a dealer as most, if not all, are aware of it and will have encountered it. You could also try appealing here on Scoobynet for a local fellow member who has suffered it and ask them to come over for a listen, I'm sure you will not be short of volunteers as we are a friendly bunch on here :). To this end you could perhaps e-mail people in the threads you find.

In the meantime, I've had it on 2 of my Imprezas and when cold they sounded like a Ford Granada that had done 170,000 miles. The sound went after about 5 minutes of motoring.

Don't be down hearted, it may not be this at all and even if it is, it can be fixed.

Thank's Jolly STi and Otis I'll take a look now!

Otis, how did you fix your two slappers, and what did they cost (unless you were lucky enough to get it done under warranty!)to put right. I am suffering a bit of cold morning slap on No. 4 piston, and am under the impression that replacing this should cure it.

Cheers

Leeroy,

The first had a short motor under warranty and the second (still in warranty also) I gave straight back to the dealer a week after I bought it with a polite 'thanks but no thanks'. The dealer in question, one of the largest in the UK, proved themselves to be nothing but a set of cowboys for a)selling a car in that condition and b)lowering themselves to the level of "...they all do that sir...".

As for the replacement piston option, well I just ain't convinced on that one to be honest. I can't seem to get my head round the 'one piston and bore bigger than the others' bit. Call me old fashioned but that can't be good.

Don't know what else to say really, other than if you decide to part-ex it I know just the dealer to off load it on to :).

Not really what I wanted to hear! Which dealer are you referring to by the way, seeing as though you're from my neck of the woods?
